Although multimodal composition seems rather odd in a writing classroom, it allows for information to be communicated in a way that transcends beyond the classroom.  Prior to this class, all but one of my English classes
has culminated in a final assignment related to a research or final paper.  Therefore, when we were told our final assignment would be a multimodal composition I was happily surprised.

The purpose of a multimodal composition is to communicate an idea or a message to a targeted audience.  Depending on who your audience may be, you have to decide what makes the most sense for them.  For example, a group of college students isn’t going to read a 10 page paper for ‘funsies.’  It would be better suited for them to view a short film (under 2 minutes) or a single image to understand the message.

 

 

For a group of senior citizens, a poster featuring step by step instructions might be the best option.  For a group of school children it may be a cartoon.  And for a group of middle-aged people perhaps a political cartoon?

 

Basically, you have to pick your audience and identify the best way to communicate your message to that group.

In addition to catering to a specific demographic, you are given an opportunity to tap into your creative side.  At times, it can be challenging to put an idea into words.  It may be easier to express it through an image, video, or political cartoon.  This project gives you the opportunity to express yourself in a way that is more than just another English paper.

 

 

Additionally, in the digital age we live in, it is necessary to not only have reading and writing skills, but also digital programming skills.  Knowing how to use Adobe InDesign, iMovie, Excel, etc. is invaluable in school and as we progress to the workplace.  This assignment allows for you to explore and play with different programming without fear of repercussion or falling short.  Sure you receive a grade at the end, but it isn’t the big sales pitch for an up and coming international firm.  Rather, it is an opportunity for growth.
