Family Life

After Josephine Baker returned to France from her failure in America she married Jean Lion and thereby gained French citizenship. They later divorced.

In 1947 Josephine married Jo Boullion, a famous French orchestra conductor.

Together, Josephine and Jo adopted 12 children of all different ethnicities.

Josephine called her family her “Rainbow Tribe”, and used her family to prove her belief that people of all ethnicities could live together in peace.

They resided in a 15th century castle called the Château de Milandes.

Josephine often invited reporters into her home to prove how happy their family was.

Josephine moved her American family to France to live with her in the Château.

Unfortunately, even Josephine’s phenomenal success didn’t provide her with enough money to afford the Château and the costs of raising 12 children, and the bank foreclosed on the Château de Milandes in 1969.
