A Very Important Anniversary for the SCU Alumni Association

This month the SCU Alumni Association is celebrating a milestone anniversary and Archives & Special Collections is getting in on the fun by offering a little quiz to test your knowledge. Use the images from the first ledger of the Alumni Association held in the SCU Archives to answer these fun questions. It’s almost as fun as digging through the records of the Alumni Association in person, but don’t delay – we’re only taking entries through April 30, 2021.

3 Society of Alumni Santa Clara College. Santa Clara College April 27th 1881. Pursuant to a printed circular issued by Messrs. B.D. Murphy, A. F. Sauffrignon, W.G. Kennedy, Jas. H. Campbell and Chas F. Wiley, and mailed to the graduates of Santa Clara College, about thirty of the alumni at the College, for the purpose of organizing an Association. After partaking of an elegant lunch generously provided by the College Authorities, and some time spent in happily reliving the memories of other days, the gentlemen present were conducted to the Hall of the Philalethic Debating. 4 been called to order, Hon. B.D. Murphy was chosen chairman, and Chas. F. Wiley Secretary of the meeting. At the request of the chairman, the Secretary then made a few remarks stating the object of the gathering. The first business being the adoption of a constitution, the Secretary then produced a draft of a constitution, framed by the gentlemen who had called the meeting and at the request of the chair, read the same. Upon motion, each section was separately considered, and after several amendments, the Constitution was adopted, as the same is engrossed herein at the end of these minutes. The Society then proceeded to the election of officers, by ballot, when Hon. B. D. Murphy was elected President; John M Burnett, Vice President; Chas. J. Wiley, Secretary; Thas. F. Morrison, Treasurer; and
A. L. Veuve, A. F. Sauffrignon, Jas. H. Campbell, and W. C. Kennedy, members of the Executive Committee, the President of the College, Rev. John Pinasco S.J. being ex officio a member of the Executive Committee, pursuant to the constitution. The following named gentlemen were then elected Honorary Members of the Society, viz; Rev. A Varsi, S.J. and Messrs. G. T. Ryland, D. Belden and Frs. E. Spencer. An assessment of $2.50 per each was then levied, to be paid upon demand by the Treasurer for the purposes of the Society. The members present then signed the rough draft of the Constitution, the same being yet unengrossed. The meeting then adjourned, to meet the call of the executive committee. Chas. J. Wiley Secretary
