Homeland Remix

The excerpt from “Homeland,” the sequel to “Little Brother” is a continuation of Marcus’ involvement with the movement against the DHS. The novel begins four years after the terrorist attack, with Marcus and Ange at the Burning Man Festival in the desert in Nevada. While at the festival, they run into Masha and Zeb, two people they worked with during the DHS crisis. Masha, the girl working for the DHS but who tried to help Marcus escape in the first book, returns and gives Marcus a USB drive. The reader is unsure of what is on the USB drive, but Masha insinuates that it is highly confidential and that it may reveal some government secrets.  The plot thickens when Carrie Johnstone, the DHS officer who tortured Marcus, shows up at the Burning Man festival. There is a mysterious explosion, and Marcus is convinced Johnstone is somehow behind it.

In the last scene, we see that Marcus, Ange and Darryl discover a photo of Zeb holding the knife that was used to stab Darryl. The fact that this photo exists indicates that someone was watching Marcus, Darryl and their friends, and also saw Zeb stab Darryl. At this point in the story, it is unclear as to who took the photos, or why they took them. However, it is clear that Zeb is working for the government in some capacity. It is also unclear why Zeb stabbed Darryl, but one prediction could be that it was to put Marcus and Darryl into a position in which they would need to find help, thus enabling the DHS to pick the group up for questioning after the terrorist attack.
