In 1989, six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter were killed at University of Central America. Shortly thereafter, with deep faith and hope, Dean volunteered to work at the UCA and accompany the poor of El Salvador. He described the calling to go to El Salvador as \u201ca fast pitch down the middle\u201d \u2026 and he had to swing.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Dean became the pitcher on the mound,\u00a0throwing fastballs down the middle to us -the international community- inviting us to take a swing at engaging in the Salvadoran reality, letting our hearts be broken and discerning our vocations, what it means to be privileged in an unjust world and to be disciples of Christ and the Salvadoran martyrs.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_346\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/writeherewritenow\/files\/2011\/10\/Chapel-UCA1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-346\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-346\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/writeherewritenow\/files\/2011\/10\/Chapel-UCA1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/writeherewritenow\/files\/2011\/10\/Chapel-UCA1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/writeherewritenow\/files\/2011\/10\/Chapel-UCA1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/writeherewritenow\/files\/2011\/10\/Chapel-UCA1.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-346\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Communities from Jayaque and Las Palmas at the UCA&#039;s Chapel<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In many ways, how the Programa Velasco staff came to know<br \/>\nEl Salvador was because of Dean&#8217;s influence. His visionary gifts led him to initiate the creation of the remarkable Santa Clara University&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.lowthiandesign.com\/t\/r\/l\/tujtjly\/cvhykjlk\/c\/\" target=\"_blank\">Casa de la Solidaridad\u00a0<\/a>study abroad program.
