{"id":1567,"date":"2018-10-18T21:04:20","date_gmt":"2018-10-18T21:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/writeherewritenow\/?p=1567"},"modified":"2018-10-18T21:04:20","modified_gmt":"2018-10-18T21:04:20","slug":"where-is-your-happiness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/writeherewritenow\/2018\/10\/18\/where-is-your-happiness\/","title":{"rendered":"Where is Your Happiness?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An ancient Zen story explains how the famous teacher Joshu became enlightened.\u00a0 One day, he approached a wise monk, Nansen, asking about the path to happiness.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ordinary mind is the way,&#8221; Nansen replied.<\/p>\n<p>Joshu did not understand so he asked again: &#8220;How do I know the way?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Knowledge is delusion; not knowledge is confusion. The way is clear and open like space,&#8221; Nansen said.<\/p>\n<p>When Joshu heard that, he attained understanding of the way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/writeherewritenow\/files\/2015\/01\/ripples.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1167\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/writeherewritenow\/files\/2015\/01\/ripples.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a>Because I teach for a living, I was puzzled at first about the idea of knowledge as &#8220;delusion.&#8221; But after a while I realized that Nansen was pointing at taking one more step beyond knowledge&#8211;when applied to the present moment, knowledge becomes experience. It is within the realm of your experience, moment by moment, that the way becomes clear. If you can see clearly &#8220;what is&#8221; in front of you, moment by moment, then the way is open and clear.<\/p>\n<p>Now take a few moments and practice mindful breathing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In your own life, what is <em>the way<\/em> for you?<\/li>\n<li>Again, breathe in deep, breathe out slow.<\/li>\n<li>Ask yourself.
