Internet culture, as found on an online dictionary,  is a unique set of habits, values, and other elements of culture that have evolved from the use of computers and the Internet. It is the study of various social phenomena associated with the Internet and other new forms of network communication, such as online communities, online gaming, social media, etc. and includes issues related to identity, privacy, and network formation. The projects and Blogs of this course explore major issues of the digital public sphere, especially the increase interest in digital civic engagement and collaborative participation in virtual cultural production.

Blogs

Each Blog summarizes, analyzes and provides my personal input for a specific assigned reading. Each reading relates to the overarching topic of the course.  The blogs cover specific topics from current issues surrounding the internet to the possibilities for the future of internet and technology. The writing for theses blogs really allowed for me to engage in  major uses, features, and forms of writing for electronic media.

Online barting culture – connections made. Source: Flickr

For this project we searched and found an online culture. The project is an ethnographic report on GameTZ, am online bartering culture. I defined what an online culture meant: among other things, it relies heavily on the notion of information and knowledge exchange. And I then connected GameTZ with the definition.  The culture has the internet as its primary site of operation and carries equal characteristics of a “real life” culture such as stories, symbols, history, rules and much more.

Tactical Hypertext

This project is a research-based argument that encourages civic engagement for children. The core of this project is a tactical video that I created. The main argument for this project was to make stricter regulations for the media aimed at children. The reason for this argument is the arising issue that I hope to make parents aware of: children are being pushed to grow up too fast and are losing their childhood.

In this project my group covered a focused analysis of reoccurring themes in Cory Doctorow’s novel Little Brother. Our group focus on government tracking of individuals in today’s society. As a complement to the project we wrote a script for a remix of Little Brother’s sequel, Homeland and created a machinima video based on this script. The video really illustrates how the technologies of tomorrow are here today and it’s being utilized to surveil and track society’s every move.
