What is the Answer?

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I am definitely against recial prejudice, discrimination, and segregation. There is no doubt about that, and I feel that everyone should have this stance. If people do not have this opinion and feel that segregation is right, we can only hope to change their views with positive ideas.

Of course copious people have this stance, but they are unaware of how their actions may not reflect this. I can honestly say without bias that I have a wide range of friends. For example, my boyfriend is Black, which is usually not common for Asians. I feel as though I am comfortable dating any person of any race because race or the color of their skin has no affect on how I view someone. Thus, most of my friends are of different races. I greatly enjoy having a wide array of friends because this helps me to learn about different cultures and views that I may not be exposed to in another way. This is not particularly common at SCU, but having the student body have a diverse group of friends is possible if we acknowledge this problem of segregation.

In order to reduce these racial issues, we must present awareness to the SCU students, and all college students around the world. To do this, we first have to show that there is an issue regarding race and social awareness on our campus. Some of the ways we can do this is by:

  • Changing multicultural dorm set-ups by incorporating students of all races, including Caucasians, to have a mixed dorm environment
  • Having clubs/organizations that are not culture- or race-specific, such as “All Around the World”
  • Requiring a short presentation to incoming Freshmen about the prominence of prejudice and discrimination on campus, and how to prevent it
  • Having students make their own presentation about why prejudice, discrimination, and segregation is not right especially in a college environment

Asking for all of these changes does not mean that they will happen quickly. Change takes much time and effort, which I hope that people will consider to invest in.

All in all, I hope that my research will help others to push towards a college environment where all students of different races will interact with one another.
