In 1940, Santa Clara County&#8217;s orchards alone supplied over half of the nation&#8217;s supply of apricots and plums. Santa Clara College had used this fertile land in the 1870\u2019s to develop student sustained vineyards, olive trees, orchards, and gardens. Although orchards of \u201cThe Valley of Heart\u2019s Delight\u201d have mostly been paved over, remnants of the fruitful region continue to thrive in \u201cSilicon Valley.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_631\" style=\"width: 212px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-631\" class=\"size-full wp-image-631\" style=\"border-style: initial;border-color: initial\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/virtualsantaclara\/files\/2011\/11\/sic1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/virtualsantaclara\/files\/2011\/11\/sic1.jpg 252w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/virtualsantaclara\/files\/2011\/11\/sic1-194x300.jpg 194w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-631\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Silicon Valley is now a global resource for advancements in technology<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Technology based companies like Apple, Inc., which employ many SCU alumni, have paved over the valley, transforming this region into a globally known center of technology innovation. However, this transformation has created many environmental problems.
