Student contributions to the <em>Redwood<\/em> also reveal the dramatic changes that have happened on campus over time. The first volumes of the <em>Redwood<\/em>s, beginning in 1902, were published monthly and contained information such as athletic standings and college affairs. Their goal was to encourage literary activity, and connect students and alumni to their alma mater. The <em>Redwood<\/em> replaced an early publication called the <em>Owl<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_395\" style=\"width: 154px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/virtualsantaclara\/files\/2011\/11\/7772.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-395\" class=\"size-full wp-image-395\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/virtualsantaclara\/files\/2011\/11\/7772.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"144\" height=\"98\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-395\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1970s Redwoods that depict artistic and photographic reflection themes<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During the 1920s, the <em>Redwood<\/em> became more like a yearbook, incorporating student humor and personality. This led the way for new styles of presentation including photos, student life, and class portraits. Past issues of the <em>Redwood<\/em>reveal student attitudes of the day. For example, the male student body found the idea of educated women on campus at first humorous because of the gendered stereotypes of the time.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_704\" style=\"width: 152px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/virtualsantaclara\/files\/2011\/11\/234.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-704\" class=\"size-full wp-image-704  \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/virtualsantaclara\/files\/2011\/11\/234.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"142\" height=\"140\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-704\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Student pranks featured in the 1978 edition of the Redwood<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Changes at SCU, such as during wartime, are seen through the <em>Redwood<\/em>\u00a0and provide insight about alterations within society.
