The population of Santa Clara Valley exploded with American, Chinese, and European immigrants. While most prospectors found nothing, many made a profit by providing <a href=\"http:\/\/museumca.org\/goldrush\/path.html\">this new population of immigrants<\/a> with services and goods.<\/p>\n<p>These entrepreneurs took advantage of the Santa Clara Valley\u2019s resources in order to meet local demand.\u00a0 One of these many industries included capturing the mineral water from local springs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-279\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/virtualsantaclara\/files\/2011\/11\/Almaden1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"265\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Santa Clara College was also founded during the Gold Rush, to serve the growing population of the valley. Nineteenth century Santa Clara students enjoyed the fruits of local industry, depositing this soda bottle where <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=o%27connor+hall+santa+clara&amp;hl=en&amp;ll=37.34993,-121.94158&amp;spn=0.002828,0.003245&amp;client=firefox-a&amp;hnear=O%27Connor+Hall,+Santa+Clara,+California+95050&amp;gl=us&amp;t=h&amp;z=18&amp;vpsrc=6\">O\u2019Connor Hall is today<\/a>. Back then, it was the former <a href=\"http:\/\/content.scu.edu\/cdm4\/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=\/claravision&amp;CISOPTR=121&amp;DMSCALE=25&amp;DMWIDTH=600&amp;DMHEIGHT=600&amp;DMX=334&amp;DMY=0&amp;DMMODE=viewer&amp;DMTEXT=&amp;REC=14&amp;DMTHUMB=1&amp;DMROTATE=0\">California Hotel,<\/a> where Santa Clara College housed several dormitories and classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>The bottle is a small reminder of how the local economy grew very rapidly in a short period of time.<\/p>\n<p>It is labeled \u201cNew Almaden Mineral Water,\u201d which was bottled by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almadentimes.com\/031104\/vichy_wat.htm\">Vichy Water Company<\/a> between 1867 and 1882.
