Santa Clara College and the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: medium\">surrounding area was one place wh<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: medium\">ere these immigrants made their new home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: medium\">Severino Martinelli came to California when he was 14 years old to work with his father and uncle, who had left Switzerland in the 1850s during a period of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/swissroots.headwire.com\/swissroots\/en\/stories\/heritage\/Heritage\/Swiss%20Emigration%20to%20the%20USA\/19th-century.html\">famine and civil war<\/a><\/span>. In the 1860\u2019s, Severino became friends with Father Caredda, the prefect of discipline and band director at the young Santa Clara College.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 429px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/content.scu.edu\/cgi-bin\/getimage.exe?CISOROOT=\/claravision&amp;CISOPTR=44&amp;DMSCALE=27.71363&amp;DMWIDTH=600&amp;DMHEIGHT=600&amp;DMX=0&amp;DMY=0&amp;DMTEXT=%201860&amp;REC=9&amp;DMTHUMB=1&amp;DMROTATE=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"419\" height=\"236\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Santa Clara College Band 1860. Courtesy of the SCU Archives and Special Collections.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: medium\">U<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: medium\">nder C<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium;font-family: Verdana\">aredda\u2019s tutelage, Severino learned to sing, play the organ, and compose music, even though he was not a student. Mr. Martinelli was a man of many ta<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: medium\">lents; he played the organ and was the cantor at mass.
