Interview Questions

Note: These generic, sample questions were formulated before approaching any individuals. The actual interviews (3) turned out to be more like discussions than a structured question-answer session.

To: A pastor, reverend, or leader of the church

  1. What made you want to participate in the Metropolitan Community Church?
  2. How do you think this church differs from others, besides the open welcome of those of any sexuality?
  3. How long has this particular branch been running?
  4. How does the church help young teenagers who do not necessarily feel welcome on other places of worship cope with discovering themselves through sexuality or religion?
  5. How many regular members does this church have?
  6. Have you ever branched out to other areas of California or the world?
  7. Why do you, as a leader in a religious organization, think it is important to welcome differences such as sexuality within something like a church?

To: A regular member of the church

  1. How did you find the Metropolitan Community Church?
  2. How long have you been with this particular denomination?
  3. Did you join this church because of its positive stance toward the LGBTQ community? And if so, have you found this church helpful in finding a place of worship that is in agreement with your views on sexuality?
  4. What effect do you think, as a regular member, does this aspect of the church have on its surrounding community?
  5. Do you think you feel more connected with the other members of this church because you all support the LGBTQ community?
