Prayers for Bobby

The made-for-television film, Prayers for Bobby, starring Sigourney Weaver and Ryan Kelley, is about a Christian family with a son who realizes he is gay. The family tries to “cure” him, but it only leads him to spiral into a depression. The mother (Weaver) has the hardest time adjusting to this change as she is the most devout of the family. After several hardships, she visits a nearby Metropolitan Community Church to discuss the Bible’s take on homosexuality with the pastor.

This film actually introduced me to the idea of churches that were accepting of the LGBT community before I had even heard of the Metropolitan Community Church. I think people often stereotype religions, believing that anyone who is religious automatically is against the gay community. The film also points out that churches like the MCC are not just for the young teenagers who are confused about their religious identity and their sexuality, but also for the parents and families who are trying to cope with the changes their children are trying to face and the often negative reactions from their own churches and the rest of society.
