Catholic universities and colleges who are based on the catholic principles and faith have admitted to providing birth control and its prescriptions to their own students on campus. Even the biggest Catholic university in the nation, DePaul University, offers their students contraception coverage as part of their health plan. They are currently following the federal rule in Obama Care that Obama has imposed on health insurers being able to provide contraception coverage in their health plan. The only exception to the law is that it is not applicable to places of worship like churches. Not all, however, have adopted that law of providing their students with contraception at Catholic institutions especially since the Catholic Church is against any form of birth control such as condoms.
“Catholic church leaders have denounced the rule as an affront to religious freedom” (Edwards-Levy). A war is said to have been created between Obama and the Catholic Church for enforcing laws that conflict with the Catholic church’s own beliefs and policies regarding contraception, especially within its confines. The Catholic Church has claimed birth control as a sin because it prevents conception, even though a great portion of Catholics themselves use them.
Even my own university, Santa Clara University, has rejected the idea of providing contraception under the Obama Care Health Plan. They have decided to uphold their catholic values and not make an exception to their rules about not having contraceptives within the university confines.
