On May 30, 2011 at approximately 1:00 a.m., Kimi Augusto reached for her phone to read an incoming text message. As Kimi checked her phone, her Nissan Altima drifted off the side of the road. She over-corrected her car, hit the center guardrail and ended up sideways, blocking both lanes of Highway 101. An oncoming car hit the driver side of her car, and the impact of the accident snapped her neck and left her lower extremities mangled. Kimberly Augusto, age 20, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.<\/p>\n

Texting while driving has quickly become one of the top distractions for drivers in the past ten years. This distraction can have serious and often fatal consequences. This website is dedicated explaining the dangers of texting while driving, and what we must do to decrease the incidence of texting and driving.<\/p>\n

In this website, I outline the current laws<\/a>,\u00a0statistics\u00a0and attitudes<\/a> regarding texting and driving, a literature review<\/a> and annotated bibliography<\/a> of my sources. I also discuss what you can do to take action<\/a> against texting and driving, including a video<\/a> demonstrating why this is such a problem. After conducting a lot of research, I have determined the best plan of action is to mandate all U.S. drivers education programs and traffic schools to teach a unit on texting and driving. Texting while driving has become a huge problem because most people do not fully understand just how dangerous it is. Awareness and education for all drivers will be the key to solving this problem and could potentially save many lives. This is your opportunity to save a life\u2026 What will you do?<\/p>\n
