Blog Post 16: Territory and Gaps

Kantz writes that realm of which I student is doing his research is called “the territory” or subject of the research one is conducting. While the gaps are the holes of knowledge we have to fill for better understanding of a topic. So for me, my territory is the actual scu.library, this is where I do most of my research, and where I find most of the answers I am looking for to fill in my so called “gaps.” We are constantly filling in ‘gaps’ when completing research. This is a way of connecting different perspectives to generate an authentic argument.

In my research I learned that you must get to know your territory, and then work on really digging deep into each crevice or gap. Not every source you find may be complete enough, which is why you must know exactly where to go next within your territory to fill in the gaps. Think of a gap as a question that you ponder or obstacle you approach when you read an article. This typically leads to questions like Why does the author think that way? And What effect does (your source) have? All of these questions are the gaps that need to be filled in our research, in order to compose a well-presented argument later.
