{"id":143,"date":"2013-03-25T23:55:31","date_gmt":"2013-03-26T06:55:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/saravierra\/?p=143"},"modified":"2013-03-26T21:34:43","modified_gmt":"2013-03-27T04:34:43","slug":"a-list-e-lit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/saravierra\/2013\/03\/25\/a-list-e-lit\/","title":{"rendered":"A-List E-Lit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After reading up on e-books, I found another medium for literature that I haven\u2019t really explored before: online literature.\u00a0 As it turns out, there is an entire organization committed to \u201cto facilitate and promote the writing, publishing, and reading of literature in electronic media,\u201d and it is called the <a href=\"http:\/\/eliterature.org\">Electronic Literature Organization<\/a> (ELO).<\/p>\n<p>Initially I thought that e-lit was all short anime or <i>50 Shades of Grey<\/i>-esque stories.\u00a0 Turns out I\u2019m wrong.\u00a0 As defined by the ELO, electronic literature is \u201cworks with important literary aspects that take advantage of the capabilities and contexts provided by the stand-alone or networked computer.\u201d\u00a0 It encourages \u201cartists, writers, teachers, developers, and scholars\u201d to connect and promotes e-lit as a \u201cdigital art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"www.xda-developers.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-145\" alt=\"nook-ebooks-ereader-image\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/saravierra\/files\/2013\/03\/nook-ebooks-ereader-image-216x300.jpg\" width=\"216\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/saravierra\/files\/2013\/03\/nook-ebooks-ereader-image-216x300.jpg 216w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/saravierra\/files\/2013\/03\/nook-ebooks-ereader-image.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a>What excites me about the prospect of online books is twofold: there\u2019s same reason I like the Nook I am about to buy &#8212; I can take it anywhere.\u00a0 Secondly, the ELO talks about uploading ancient works into its system, which will be helpful throughout college; I won\u2019t have to request books that I can\u2019t find in University Library.\u00a0 However, I also read an article from DigitalHumanities.org that surprised me by saying the exact opposite: \u201cIt is a sector of digital humanities focused specifically on born-digital literary artifacts, rather than on using the computer and the network to redistribute, analyze, or recontextualize artifacts of print culture.\u201d\u00a0 The article was from 2009, which makes me wonder if the idea of e-literature has transformed since then (the ELO article was from June of 2012, so I\u2019m guessing it has).\u00a0 But maybe different people have different ideas of what e-literature should be about.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I think e-literature should be a combination of everything \u2013 old works and new, the internet is the perfect place to distribute all that artists have ever had and will continue to offer.\u00a0 It is 2013, and it is about time we start providing all books, stories, novels, and pamphlets to all corners of the world.\u00a0 The internet is the perfect place for that.\u00a0 I applaud the ELO for its work towards \u201cfoster[ing] and promot[ing] the reading, writing, teaching, and understanding of literature as it develops and persists in a changing digital environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s time <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">to read <\/span>\u00a0explore!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After reading up on e-books, I found another medium for literature that I haven\u2019t really explored before: online literature.\u00a0 As it turns out, there is an entire organization committed to \u201cto facilitate and promote the writing, publishing, and reading of &hellip;
