Similar to my last post<\/a>, I would like to reflect on another one of my peers presentations from this past week in CTW II. \u00a0My friend and peer Taylor, discussed the gender inequality on college campuses. \u00a0Her topic is virtually the same as my own, but it was amazing to see the different perspectives we found in our research and the avenues we chose to pursue further.<\/p>\n

In her presentation, she discussed the idea of “true womanhood” which came from the value system of the nineteenth century “cult of domesticity.” \u00a0This value system e<\/strong><\/span>mphasized women\u2019s role within the household. \u00a0<\/b>With this, they were told to\u00a0<\/span>follow four fundamental virtues<\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>piety<\/strong>, purity<\/strong>, submissiveness<\/strong>, and domesticity<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In her research she found a significant amount detailing the work of women in the home as mother’s and wives. \u00a0I, too, found various articles discussing women’s roles as wife, mother, and housekeeper. \u00a0Additionally, many articles touched on the notion of women as natural teachers<\/strong>. \u00a0Since women were given this foundation as teachers, they were in need of greater education. \u00a0It is quite challenging for one to teach a group of students with a higher education than she.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the idea of “true womanhood” may seem outdated, modernly, society still views women in a\u00a0subsidiary light<\/strong>\u00a0to men.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\"gymoutfitmain\"For example, in both Taylor and my presentations, we brought up the incident with “midriff girl<\/strong>” on the Santa Clara University campus. \u00a0Grace DiChristina was asked to leave Malley Fitness Center for her attire exposing a small part of her stomach. \u00a0Coincidentally, at the time of the incident men wearing muscle shirts<\/strong> or playing shirts vs skins<\/strong> basketball \u00a0were not asked to change or leave. \u00a0The policy has since changed to affect both men’s and women’s attire, but the policy was initially only<\/strong> seeming to affect female<\/strong> gym goers.<\/p>\n

Societies discriminatory<\/strong> attitudes toward women have existed since the beginning of women’s educational rights, and continue to persist today. \u00a0Whether\u00a0it is subconscious or intended is beside the point, it is simply engraved<\/strong> in our culture and in need<\/strong> of change<\/strong> as we move forward.<\/p>\n
