which came from the value system of the nineteenth century &#8220;cult of domesticity.&#8221; \u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This value system <strong>e<\/strong><\/span><b>mphasized women\u2019s role within the household. \u00a0<\/b>With this, they were told <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to\u00a0<\/span>follow<b> four fundamental virtues<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>piety<\/strong>, <strong>purity<\/strong>, <strong>submissiveness<\/strong>, and <strong>domesticity<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.returnofkings.com\/55516\/deconstructing-the-cult-of-true-womanhood\">http:\/\/www.returnofkings.com\/55516\/deconstructing-the-cult-of-true-womanhood<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-93 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/files\/2016\/05\/hammerfeminist-277x300.jpg\" alt=\"hammerfeminist\" width=\"277\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/files\/2016\/05\/hammerfeminist-277x300.jpg 277w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/files\/2016\/05\/hammerfeminist.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.returnofkings.com\/55516\/deconstructing-the-cult-of-true-womanhood\">http:\/\/www.returnofkings.com\/55516\/deconstructing-the-cult-of-true-womanhood<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In her research she found a significant amount detailing the work of women in the home as mother&#8217;s and wives. \u00a0I, too, found various articles discussing women&#8217;s roles as wife, mother, and housekeeper. \u00a0Additionally, many articles touched on the notion of women as <strong>natural teachers<\/strong>. \u00a0Since women were given this foundation as teachers, they were in need of greater education. \u00a0It is quite challenging for one to teach a group of students with a higher education than she.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">While the idea of &#8220;true womanhood&#8221; may seem outdated, modernly, society still views women in a\u00a0<strong>subsidiary light<\/strong>\u00a0to men.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While the idea of &#8220;true womanhood&#8221; may seem outdated, modernly, society still views women in a <strong>subsidiary light<\/strong> to men. \u00a0The sexist definitions of women&#8217;s role in society still exist causing the unequal advantage of men to women in the college experience. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-95 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/files\/2016\/05\/gymoutfitmain-300x191.jpg\" alt=\"gymoutfitmain\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/files\/2016\/05\/gymoutfitmain-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/files\/2016\/05\/gymoutfitmain-768x488.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/files\/2016\/05\/gymoutfitmain.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>For example, in both Taylor and my presentations, we brought up the incident with &#8220;<strong>midriff girl<\/strong>&#8221; on the Santa Clara University campus. \u00a0Grace DiChristina was asked to leave Malley Fitness Center for her attire exposing a small part of her stomach. \u00a0Coincidentally, at the time of the incident men wearing <strong>muscle shirts<\/strong> or playing shirts vs <strong>skins<\/strong> basketball \u00a0were not asked to change or leave. \u00a0The policy has since changed to affect both men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s attire, but the policy was initially <strong>only<\/strong> seeming to affect<strong> female<\/strong> gym goers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/life\/woman-gym-midriff\">http:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/life\/woman-gym-midriff<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">\n<p>Societies <strong>discriminatory<\/strong> attitudes toward women have existed since the beginning of women&#8217;s educational rights, and continue to persist today. \u00a0Whether\u00a0it is subconscious or intended is beside the point, it is simply <strong>engraved<\/strong> in our culture and in <strong>need<\/strong> of <strong>change<\/strong> as we move forward.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gender Inequality\u00a0 https:\/\/oxfamblogs.org\/fp2p\/do-we-need-to-think-in-new-ways-about-gender-and-inequality\/ &nbsp;
