{"id":64,"date":"2016-04-27T06:26:16","date_gmt":"2016-04-27T06:26:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/?p=64"},"modified":"2016-04-27T06:26:16","modified_gmt":"2016-04-27T06:26:16","slug":"does-education-inhibit-creativity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/2016\/04\/27\/does-education-inhibit-creativity\/","title":{"rendered":"Does Education Inhibit Creativity?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I wanted to respond to my friend Alex&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/amansblackjournal.wordpress.com\/2016\/04\/25\/schools-kill-creativity\/\">post<\/a> entitled <em>School&#8217;s Kill Creativity. \u00a0<\/em>In this, he describes his experience watching the TedTalk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/ken_robinson_says_schools_kill_creativity?language=en#t-243440\">Do school&#8217;s kill creativity?<\/a> by Ken Robinson. \u00a0First of all, props to him for watching a TedTalk a day, that is extremely admirable and I am sure that he has learned an uncanny amount from it. \u00a0Second,\u00a0in the talk,\u00a0Robinson shows\u00a0our <strong>education system<\/strong>s are virtually <strong>taking away students creativity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/files\/2016\/04\/Unknown-7.png\" alt=\"Unknown-7\" width=\"268\" height=\"188\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the-skore.com\/the-magic-of-hierarchy\/\">http:\/\/the-skore.com\/the-magic-of-hierarchy\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As Robinson\u00a0points out there is a <strong>hierarchy<\/strong> within <strong>education<\/strong>. \u00a0As silly as this may sound, it is true and can be witnessed in most any school around the country and perhaps the world. \u00a0As he points out, schools require more math courses than art classes. \u00a0While math is extremely valuable, Robinson points out that while we should replace math classes with art classes, we should\u00a0\u00a0treat classes that <strong>embrace creativity<\/strong>\u00a0as important as those that are more analytical.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-67\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/files\/2016\/04\/little-girl-doing-art-1-300x245.jpg\" alt=\"little-girl-doing-art-1\" width=\"300\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/files\/2016\/04\/little-girl-doing-art-1-300x245.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/files\/2016\/04\/little-girl-doing-art-1-768x627.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/files\/2016\/04\/little-girl-doing-art-1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=i&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=images&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjVtMfgla7MAhWJLmMKHa-QCX4QjB0IBg&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fnovakdjokovicfoundation.org%2Fdid-you-know%2Flearn-to-decode-childrens-drawings%2F&amp;bvm=bv.120853415,d.cGc&amp;psig=AFQjCNEMF1vzQ0IdysG_CqhqwXIbVPRgPQ&amp;ust=1461824224184323\">novakdjokovicfoundation.org<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"t-310711\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">In the talk, he shares several short examples of children unafraid of being wrong. \u00a0One features a six year old girl who said she was drawing a picture of herself with God. \u00a0At this point, her teacher tells her that no one knows what God looks like and she promptly responds, &#8220;They will in a minute.&#8221; \u00a0Her <strong>blissful ignorance<\/strong> and open creativity allow her to imagine and create God for herself. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"t-310711\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">Children are free to take a chance and have little to no regard for the outcome. \u00a0As Robinson eloquently says, children are &#8220;<\/span><span id=\"t-316457\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">not frightened of being <strong>wrong<\/strong>&#8230;<\/span><span id=\"t-324886\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">What we do know is, if you&#8217;re not prepared to be wrong,<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"t-328000\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">you&#8217;ll never come up with anything <strong>original<\/strong> &#8212;<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"t-330391\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">if you&#8217;re not prepared to be wrong.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"t-332877\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">And by the time they get to be adults, most kids have <strong>lost<\/strong> that capacity.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"t-337406\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">They have become frightened of being wrong.&#8221; \u00a0The quote points out that as people grow up they are less and less likely to take a leap or try something new. \u00a0There is an outside pressure to always <strong>predict<\/strong> the outcome of your actions. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-68 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/files\/2016\/04\/dance-620x260-300x126.png\" alt=\"dance-620x260\" width=\"300\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/files\/2016\/04\/dance-620x260-300x126.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/rpendergast\/files\/2016\/04\/dance-620x260.png 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkersgymnasticsdance.com\">http:\/\/www.walkersgymnasticsdance.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In another story,\u00a0Robinson describes the story of a young girl prior to having\u00a0access to\u00a0learning disability <strong>medication<\/strong>.
