The Art of Research

Get Her Done Attitude

As we have started taking steps towards our final research assignment, I have begun to think about how I completed research in the past.  Rather than enjoying the process, it was more of a hurry up and finish before the deadline.  Of course this is dependent on the project itself.  When I am fascinated by what I am learning about then I can’t wait to find a new source or read a new article.  However, when an assignment is strict on topic and content it limits ones creativity.

Favorite Assignments

To date my two favorite research projects were my Senior Project in high school and my final project for CTW I last fall.  My Senior Project was on censorship in the media.  I focused on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and their guidelines for regulation.  Interestingly, I found a variety of videos which were censored while ones of similar sort made national television with no regard for their content.  For example, this Victoria’s Secret advertisement was played during Super Bowl 49 while this Lane Bryant ad never made it to national television.

My final CTW I project was a research assignment on concert venues.  For this, I decided to interview people at three different sized venues, small, medium, and large.  I am from Portland, Oregon so I am most familiar with the music scene there, so that is where I based my research.  First, I called a 500 person all-floor venue, then a 30,000 person indoor arena, and finally a major stadium in Seattle (since Portland doesn’t have any).

What I learned

Throughout my research, I learned an immense amount about censorship and the benefits and disadvantages of different sized venues.  For some these two might seem odd to research, but I loved it.  Music has been a major part of my life for as long as I can remember and censorship has always been fascinating to me because regularly media is posted that can easily be considered offensive to some.

I have found that I most enjoy research projects when I am passionate about the topic.  As a move forward in research, I hope to find joy in the assignments I am completing.  I genuinely believe this will help me create more projects that I am proud of.
