In my CTW II class this week, each of my peers presented on their research and noted various patterns in what they found.  One that was of particular interest to me was Graham’s presentation which discussed alcohol consumption on college campuses.

recommandation_alcool_ang_v2His presentation focused on three primary categories of college campuses: dry, damp, and wet.  Dry campuses do not allow the consumption or holding of alcohol on campus regardless of a person’s age or intention.  Damp campuses generally do not condone the use of alcohol on campus, but hold some senior only or over 21 events on campus featuring the consumption of alcohol.  Wet campuses allow the use of alcohol on campus, in dorm rooms, at sporting events, etc.  Of course, even on wet campuses underage drinking is never condoned.  It is important to note that each of these definitions is lose and varies with each college.

Prior to this presentation, I had never really considered the idea of a damp campus.  Interestingly, I previously thought Santa Clara University was a dry campus as alcohol consumption or holding is not permitted on campus, but it is in fact a damp campus.

In the last few weeks, senior students have been offered educational opportunities on the art of wine and beer tasting.  There was also some kind of event in Locatelli which allowed seniors to mix with their professors and served alcohol.  As aforementioned, these were only allowed for senior students over the age of 21, but they do in fact exist on campus.

Overall, I really appreciated this presentation because it allowed me to gain a greater understanding for alcohol consumption on college campuses.  Specifically, it gave me insight into my own campus here at SCU.  As we continue this research project, I am interested to see where my classmate will go with his research.
