“The Citizens Archive of Pakistan (CAP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to cultural and historic preservation.”  The organization seeks to educate the community, foster an awareness of the nation’s history and instill pride in Pakistani citizens about their heritage.

CAP focuses primarily on oral storytelling in Pakistan in order to emphasize the importance of narratives in a dialogue rather than written word.  “[CAP] has three main goals: to preserve and provide access to the archive, to build and support educational programs, and to develop educational products based on the testimonies collected.”

The Vision

Their vision is to develop CAP as the foremost museum and heritage center focusing on Pakistani history, photography, culture, literature and historical documentation.

Each piece is demonstrative of the strength and spirit of Pakistan from the perspective of a citizen. The exhibits and gallery tell stories about the country and provide an intriguing and thought-provoking window into the nation’s past, present and future through the eyes of Pakistan’s own citizens.

A Word on the Founder

The founder of CAP is Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a two-time Academy Award winner. She is a journalist, filmmaker, and activist.  Obaid-Chinoy is famous for her documentaries “Saving Face” and “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness.”

Her work has taken her around the world and given her an opportunity to know the ins and outs of her own country, Pakistan, as well.

Her work allowed her to see the need for a citizens archive of Pakistan in order to preserve and record the history as they know it.  The vision Obaid-Chinoy helped to foster a community revolved around creating and protecting a national archive.
