{"id":242,"date":"2018-10-04T19:48:40","date_gmt":"2018-10-04T19:48:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/readlab\/?p=242"},"modified":"2018-10-04T19:48:40","modified_gmt":"2018-10-04T19:48:40","slug":"what-we-learned-at-imbes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/readlab\/2018\/10\/04\/what-we-learned-at-imbes\/","title":{"rendered":"what we learned at IMBES&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We just got back from the biennial International Mind Brain and Education Society conference in Los Angeles and wanted to follow up with some of our key take-aways.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This conference (and society) is an exceptional place for people interested in the intersection between neuroscience and education at\u00a0<strong>all levels<\/strong>, there were presentations by school administers alongside some of the top neuroscientists and geneticists in the country. And, <strong>connections<\/strong> were being made all over the place <strong>between the lab and the classroom<\/strong>. We&#8217;ll be going back in two years!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The research presented by <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/6sDYx77hCmI\">Ellen Bialystok<\/a> (and many colleagues) on the benefits\u00a0<strong>across the lifespan<\/strong> of bilingualism were jaw-dropping, and super inspiring to our lab who are still hard at work collecting data from local families on the kinds of storybooks that best support dual-language learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Along those lines, IMBES was a <strong>great venue for getting feedback<\/strong> on some of our initial conclusions and future questions about dual-language s(which we&#8217;ll be posting about soon)hared reading&#8230;\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_243\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-243\" style=\"width: 418px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-243\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/readlab\/files\/2018\/10\/paloma_IMBES-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"418\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/readlab\/files\/2018\/10\/paloma_IMBES-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/readlab\/files\/2018\/10\/paloma_IMBES-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/readlab\/files\/2018\/10\/paloma_IMBES-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 418px) 100vw, 418px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-243\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thanks to so many thoughtful listeners at Paloma&#8217;s presentation!<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<li>There were so many other presentations that had us scribbling down references, and notes and questions and ideas that we can&#8217;t list them all here.
