Here&#8217;s what we were chatting about:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gilly\u00a0Dosovitsky (&#8217;18)<\/strong>\u00a0 presented recent findings from the Bhagwat lab that when children hear a story about learning a new language, it <strong><em>reduces the &#8220;essentialist&#8221; bias<\/em><\/strong> that some monolingual (but not bilingual) children have in thinking that the language they speak is just something they&#8217;re born with (like the color of their eyes) rather than something that comes from the world around them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paloma Contreras (&#8217;19)<\/strong>,<strong> Maria Munoz Yepez (&#8217;19)\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong> Raquel Hernandez (&#8217;18)<\/strong>\u00a0presented brand new findings from the Read Lab&#8217;s local survey of 65 bilingual Spanish\/English speaking families showing how diverse shared reading practices are within many different types of bilingual families, and interestingly how invested all parents are in <strong><em>nourishing both<\/em><\/strong> their young children&#8217;s languages in dual-language homes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_229\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-229\" style=\"width: 454px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-229\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/readlab\/files\/2018\/06\/aps2-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"454\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/readlab\/files\/2018\/06\/aps2-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/readlab\/files\/2018\/06\/aps2-768x569.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/readlab\/files\/2018\/06\/aps2-1024x758.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-229\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Raquel, Paloma &amp; Maria presenting &#8220;It&#8217;s not Just Esto o Aquello&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>and,<\/p>\n<p><strong>Christina McCollum (&#8217;18)<\/strong> and <strong>Haley Green (&#8217;18)<\/strong> presented findings from their study in the Read Lab that shows reading stories with a 5-year-old can actually <em><strong>boost the positive mood<\/strong><\/em> of the reader (as well as the child) in a new take on the benefits of shared reading to all parties involved!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_230\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-230\" style=\"width: 493px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-230\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/readlab\/files\/2018\/06\/aps1-300x159.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"493\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/readlab\/files\/2018\/06\/aps1-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/readlab\/files\/2018\/06\/aps1-768x406.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/readlab\/files\/2018\/06\/aps1-1024x542.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 493px) 100vw, 493px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-230\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christy and Haley presenting &#8220;I Feel Less Blue When I Read with You&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>APS was a lot of fun and a great learning experience for all of our students!
