We, in the Read Lab love this story, too, but not just the version read by the creator himself&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/vkYmvxP0AJI\">Eric Carle reads &#8220;The Very Hungry Caterpillar&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;but also the many renditions parents do as they read this story (sometimes over and over again) with their young children. It&#8217;s actually those unique renditions, tailored to the moment and the child who is listening, with all the spin-off conversations and little check-ins that makes shared reading dynamic and fun and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0885200616300151\">nutritious<\/a>\u00a0in the ways we love. That&#8217;s why even when we have recordings of the author himself, they&#8217;re never quite as good as cuddling up with you!<\/p>\n<p>So, to celebrate Very Hungry Caterpillar Day and all the benefits of shared reading here are some real excerpts of parents reading the story transcribed from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hepg.org\/her-home\/issues\/harvard-educational-review-volume-72-issue-2\/herbooknote\/young-children-learning-at-home-and-school_64\">The Home-School Study of Language and Literacy Development<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Mom: \u00a0The very hungry caterpillar \u00a0\u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: \u00a0Okay.\u00a0<\/em><em>In the light of the moon a little egg lay on a leaf. \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: \u00a0Where&#8217;s the egg ? \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: it&#8217;s there. \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: \u00a0right . \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: Where&#8217;s the moon? \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 that&#8217;s right. o<\/em><em>kay. \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: \u00a0whoa that&#8217;s a big one! \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: okay .\u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: \u00a0One Sunday morning (.) the warm sun came up and pop (.) out of the egg came a tiny and very hungry caterpillar.\u00a0<\/em><em>Child: \u00a0where is the egg?\u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: \u00a0well it popped out of the egg. \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: the egg is back here.\u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: right there (.) <\/em><em>that was the egg.\u00a0<\/em><em>Child: and it popped out? \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: well the caterpillar popped out of the egg (.)\u00a0<\/em><em>and it was a hungry caterpillar.\u00a0<\/em><em>Child: why didn&#8217;t he eat the egg\u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: \u00a0I don&#8217;t know but we&#8217;ll turn the page and see if we can find out&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u2026\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mom: \u2026on Monday he ate through one apple but he was still hungry! \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: Monday, apple, still hungry \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: on Tuesday he ate through two pears one two but he was&#8230; \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: still hungry! \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: woah! \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: on Wednsday he ate through,\u00a0<\/em><em>how many plums? \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: three plums! \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: but he was&#8230; \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: still hungry! \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: \u00a0oh no! \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: that sounds like daddy!\u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: \u00a0on Thursday he ate through, what are those? \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: strawberries! \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: how many strawberries? \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: one two three four! \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: very good he ate through four strawberries but he was&#8230; \u00a0\u00a0<\/em><em>Child: still hungry! \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: very good.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u2026&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Child: \u00a0he was still hungry! \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: (gasps as the page is turned) <\/em><em>he ate some cake and he ate one ice cream. \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: and he ate one pizza. \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: and he ate one cheese. \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: and he ate some&#8230; \u00a0\u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: one slice of salami. \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: one slice of salami. \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: he ate\u2026 had a popsicle and he ate some pie. \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: and he had a hotdog. \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: and he had some cupcakes. \u00a0<\/em><em>Child:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and he had some watermelon. \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: and\u2026 \u00a0\u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: somebody please rewrite this <\/em><em>(laughs) <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u2026\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mom: \u00a0let&#8217;s see what he ate on this page. \u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: on Saturday he ate through one piece of chocolate cake (.) one ice cream cone (.) one pickle (.) one slice of (.) swiss cheese (.) one slice of salami (.) one lollipop (.) one piece of cherry pie (.) one sausage (.) one cupcake and one\u2026 \u00a0<\/em><em>Child: I love cupcakes. \u00a0\u00a0<\/em><em>Mom: you do?
