WOULD YOU LIVE FOREVER?

If you had a chance to live forever would you? Billionaires have begun funding projects to do exactly that, live forever. Tech billionaire Peter Thiel and Jeff Bezos are among two prominent names that are behind this movement, two men. This is what I will be talking about in this week’s blog post; the idea of immortality has occurred in almost every human’s minds, but how seriously do you take this notion?

The Chinese began searching for an immortality pill centuries before the common era and humanity has still yet to find one. Scholars today debate as to whether technological advances in cellular biology and cybernetics will allow humans to one day live forever. In summary, modern medicine will advance to the point where cancer will be eliminated, biological aging can be reversed, eventually leading to the goal of humans being able to live forever.

How does this relate to gender one may ask? Well, a recent study found that men supported the development of Indefinite Life Extension more than woman did. Indefinite Life Extension is defined as modern technologies constructing a way to allow humans to live forever. Additionally, they found that woman were generally more religious than men and religiosity was a mediating variable in this gender difference. So why is it this?

From personal experience, this conversation arose during a double date I had with my girlfriend and another couple. Both myself and my male friend agreed that living forever would be intriguing, while the females both disagreed. The woman stated that living forever would ruin the quality of life and that life would become a bore. My girlfriend specifically said, “One of the parts of being human is being mortal”. I can agree with that statement, however, mortality personally scares me. What happens when we die? Well for one, I am not religious so that does not lend an answer to me. Nonetheless, women were also said to believe more in an afterlife than men.

The mediating variable of religion is interesting. Religiosity in America is declining, with fewer people identifying with Christian sects while more people are denouncing religion. In other words, America is becoming more atheist. How is it then religion is a mediating variable? Perhaps women are more comfortable with their own mortality than men are. The study found that women have less positive attitudes towards anti-aging products, “despite the fact that women are more regular consumers of anti-aging products”. This finding seems odd, but the fact that women are generally more religious and believe more in an afterlife relates to women accepting their mortality more than men.

IS THIS TRULY THE CASE?

So maybe it is that women are more in touch with their own mortality than men are. Or maybe it is because women are less optimistic about the science and technology needed to accomplish Indefinite Life Extension. An additional mediating variable was exactly this. The author’s of the study claim that the reasons for this gender difference is, “partially explained by women’s less positive attitude toward science, as well as by stronger levels of religiosity”.

In summary, the study states that women do not support Indefinite Life Extension because they are generally more religious and do not believe in the science required to accomplish this goal. However, their findings conflict with others, and the mediating variables may have further confounding factors that attribute to the findings. The authors concede that future research needs to be done to truly understand this gender difference. Although these conclusions are based on empirical evidence, I will provide two different explanations as to why this may be happening.

An alternative explanation extrapolated from a study indicates that narcissistic men are more inclined to subscribe to patriarchal power structures. Therefore, part of being narcissistic and patriarchal is that one is selfish in their views of afterlife and power structures. The relationship to the afterlife meaning that men are selfish and do not want their own lives to end because they feel they are more important to the world than they truly are. The power structure in that since society is and has been historically patriarchal, therefore men feel as if they should be inclined to live forever. In other words, these views relate to men feeling that by living forever, they can contribute to the world more than if they were dead. Not saying that I subscribe to this point of view, nonetheless, it was an explanation that occurred to me.

Next, I will address the explanation for women. This idea arose to me out of a conversation with my girlfriend and is generally theoretical, not empirical. The consensus is that women generally do not want to live forever because they have been and continue to be marginalized in society. Marginalization such as the historical practice of coverture in the British Colonies (women being legally and economically subordinate to men) to the gender pay gap or reproductive rights issues today. The above mentioned historically patriarchal society and the disenfranchisement of women have not been solved yet. Therefore women may generally, consciously or unconsciously, view the future of women as a struggle lending to negative views towards Indefinite Life Extension.

So, women may be less supportive of Indefinite Life Extension technologies because they are generally more religious and do not believe the science will be able to reach such a capacity. These two further explanations do lend a different lens to the topic at hand and I do believe that the argument for women is stronger than that for men. Nonetheless, further research clearly needs to be done in order to find the true meaning of this gender difference. In conclusion, I would love to hear your thoughts and criticisms if you have them and I hope you enjoyed this post.

Final Project on Greek Life!

First I apologize for the bad quality, nothing I seemed to try could fix that but here’s a link to a copy of it. Anyways… this is a flyer that I created for my final project in my English class that y’all have been following, or not. I continued with my Greek life research and decided to make a flyer to spread my claim that it is beneficial for both students and administration for SCU to remain unaffiliated with Greek life. I hope you have enjoyed my blog!

Who should win the Balón de Ore?

This next years Balón de Ore will continue the tradition of recognizing the one individual soccer player who performed above the rest of his peers. This year it will most likely go to Cristiano Ronaldo after winning both the La Liga title and the Champions League title. If he were to win, this would be his fifth Balón de Ore tying Messi’s current record. It is hard to argue that any other player this campaign deserves this award especially since Real Madrid have not won the La Liga title in eight years and are the first team ever to win back to back Champions League titles. On top of that, he won the European Championships with Portugal last summer and no one has come close to those accomplishments this year and therefore I think he will won. Cristiano, Balón de Ore 2017.

Winners and Losers of the 2016/2017 Premier League Season

With Chelsea winning the 2016/2017 English Premier League title, we can no look back on the seasons winners and losers. Obviously Chelsea is an obvious winner, with the appointment of Antonio Conte last summer saw Chelsea transform after a pathetic title defending season the year prior. Conte reinvented the use of the wingbacks in a 5 in the back formation that saw both Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso have breakout seasons that won them the Prem. Another winner would be Liverpool who saw their first top four finish in 10 years during Jurgen Klopp’s first full season in charge. Phillipe Coutinho and James Milner had fantastic seasons with Milner becoming a makeshift left back for the year. Tottenham and Manchester City also finished in the top four earning them spots in the Champions League next year, but both sides expected the Premier League title this season and would be disappointed to have not claimed it.

As for the losers, the obvious three that were the relegated one’s in Hull city, Middlesbrough, and Sunderland who will now play in the English League 1 next season as Brighton and Hove Albion, Newcastle United and Huddersfield town will replace them. Additional losers were last years English Champions Leicester City as their manager of the year Claudio Ranieri was fired half way through the season and ended up finishing 12. West Ham also had high hopes after their fifth place finish the year prior but ended up in 11th. Yet the biggest loser of the year has to be Arsenal. For the first time in 20 years they did not make the top four as their manager Arsene Wenger is now under fire for his job next season. But all in all it was a fantastic season in the English Premier League.

Champions League Final Review

Real Madrid and Juventus went head to head this past Saturday in the Champions League final with Real Madrid handling Juventus in a 4-1 victory. Real Madrid made history winning the first ever back to back Champions League titles. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a shot from a deflection off a cross to put Real up 1-0. Juventus answered back 7 minutes later with arguably one of the best goals of the year and one of the best goals ever in the Champions League.

The momentum of the game seemed to stifle after this goal with both teams going into half time at 1-1. Yet with the start of the second half, Real seemed to be putting major pressure on the Juventus defense and after Casemiro scored the second goal in the 60th minute it seemed to be over. Real had the momentum from that point on and Cristiano went on the score his second goal of the game no more than six minutes after the second putting Real up 3-1 with 2o min left to play. The Real defense was no match for Juventus’s offense as they were defeated 4-1. With Real winning both the La Liga Title and the Champions League, there is no doubt in my mind that Cristiano Ronaldo will win the Balon de Ore.

Research into MultiModel

If you have been following my blog you will see a trend of soccer and Greek life posts. Well for my English class as a first year at Santa Clara University I have been doing research this past quarter on Greek life especially at SCU. Since 2001, the University has no longer recognized and affiliated themselves with Greek life as they expelled it after a hazing violation. The question I then addressed was whether after 16 years should the University and its Greek life reaffiliate. I determined that the general cons and the cons of reaffiliating outweigh the pros and it would be best for both students and the university to remain unaffiliated.

Yet my ongoing research and application does not stop there. Now I am translating my research thesis into a multimodel project. Essentially I have the option to frame my argument in another medium than a 8 page academic paper. The options we had to choose range from songs, audiobooks, podcasts, videos, letters, blog posts, Facebook posts, etc. but I ended up choosing to make a flyer. This flyer would theoretically be hung up around the Santa Clara campus in order to spread awareness about the situation and relationship between Greek life and the University today. I will post a link to the actual flyer once it is finished but I plan on having all of the Greek organizations’ letters at SCU as the background. Then there would be text about the different pros and cons to Greek life and then a conclusion box. I thought the flyer would be the best avenue to reach people as it takes little time to get the message while being able to be reach a good prospective audience.

Manchester City 2016/2017 Season Review

As the 2016/2017 English Premier League Season has wrapped up, I feel obliged to post about how my team, Manchester City did this campaign. For the first year in charge of City, Pep Guardiola finished his first ever season without winning a trophy. A major disappointment for most City supporters and critics of Pep but there were plenty of positives on the season.

The two youngsters in Leroy Sané and Gabriel Jesus were majorily influential in their first seasons at City. Sané scored 20 goals in all competitions while Jesus scored 8 in the 10 appearances he had all season. In addition, Sergio Aguero bagged 25 goals making it 4 seasons in a row scoring 25 or more which is quite impressive for the Argentine.

Besides the individual break through performances, it was apparent that the system that Pep was trying to implement seemed to be showing by the end of the season. With the departure of likely veterans and the arrival of new players that will better fit his system, next year should be one of silverware once more.

Champions League Final!

The time has finally come. After last weeks semi-final matches saw Real Madrid make it into their second consecutive Champions League Finals and Juventus reaching their eighth all time. Real Madrid breezed through their cross-town rivals Athletico Madrid beating them 5-1 on aggregate while Juventus similarly defeated Monaco 4-1. For most, these two teams were the obvious favorites going into the semi-finals and they proved to everyone pretty handily that they deserve to be in the finals. As both teams ended up winning their domestic leagues this year, both should be chomping at the bit in order to win their league and the Champions League. Real have a mighty feat in winning back to back titles due to the fact that it has never been done before. My prediction is that it will be a draw that goes into extra time with Real winning on penalties.

English Premier League Final Recap

Today marked the end of the 2016-2017 English Premier League with Chelsea winning its 6th title. They confirmed their championship the weekend prior winning at Watford 4-3 while absolutely thrashing last place and regulated Sunderland 5-1 today. It is impressive that in Antonio Conte’s first season in charge of Chelsea they were able to win the Premier League and make it to the FA cup final, setting him up potentially for a double.

Yet, otherwhere in the league saw Tottenham finish second as expected with Manchester City coming in third and Liverpool in fourth. Chelsea and the top four will all qualify for the Champions League next year with Manchester United finishing in the fifth will also join them as they won the Europa League. Hull city, Middlesbrough, and Sunderland were all relegated back down to the English League 1 while Brighton and Hove Albion, Newcastle United, and Huddersfield town will respectively take their places next year.  Leicester city did a horrible job defending their title winning season this year, and Chelsea fans will hope to not have the same thing happen to them, as it did two or three seasons ago.

Filling my research gap

MIND THE GAP!

As I continue to dive into the world of Greek life, I am left with a gap in my research. I am entering a conversation as to why there should or should not be Greek life at college campuses and if so, should they be affiliated with the school itself. What I mean by this is that there are some university’s that do not recognize the affiliation of fraternities and sororities to the school, even though they contain their own students. While conducting research, I found plenty of articles pertaining to certain pros and cons to Greek life in general. For instance, I came across sources highlighting the high levels of binge drinking, sexual misconduct, and low levels of academic performance while also stumbling upon articles that touch on the higher vocational and career goals as well as higher community service participation. Yet besides individual aspects of Greek life, it has been difficult to find sources containing arguments either for or against it. In addition, I am interested in the differences between Greek life that is affiliated with the university versus those that are not and their is very little discrepancy between the two when it comes to research. However, I should be able to appropriately enter this conversation with a current students outlook rather than some bozo scientists.
