{"id":95,"date":"2012-12-10T13:44:53","date_gmt":"2012-12-10T20:44:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/nick\/?p=95"},"modified":"2012-12-11T14:03:36","modified_gmt":"2012-12-11T21:03:36","slug":"when-gaming-and-real-life-collide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/nick\/2012\/12\/10\/when-gaming-and-real-life-collide\/","title":{"rendered":"When Gaming and Real Life Collide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/contributor\/rachel-metz\/\">Rachel Metz<\/a> is the IT editor of MIT Technology Review. \u00a0She specifically reviews things related to web and social media. \u00a0For 5 years, Rachel has served as a reporter in the technology industry at the Associated Press. \u00a0She&#8217;s also written freelance for the New York Times about technology and crime. \u00a0Rachel isn&#8217;t just a reporter, she&#8217;s also a hacker. \u00a0In 2003, she discovered a security hole in Palo Alto Unified School District\u2019s wireless network. \u00a0She was able to see sensitive and confidential information about student&#8217;s records. \u00a0Since then, Rachel has been hooked on technology and writing about it.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/news\/507681\/google-game-could-be-augmented-realitys-first-killer-app\/\">article<\/a>, Rachel discusses a new app called by Google called Ingress which is available on Android. \u00a0The Augmented Reality game requires players to join either the resistance or enlightenment. \u00a0Once on a team, players must &#8220;hack&#8221; portals which are located by points of interest within a city. \u00a0These can be something like a landmark, statue, or plaque. \u00a0Players can also link portals and create a territory for their team. \u00a0The game requires players to physically be at the location and get outside and explore their town.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_96\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.nianticproject.ingress\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-96\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/nick\/files\/2012\/12\/ingress-300x146.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/nick\/files\/2012\/12\/ingress-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/nick\/files\/2012\/12\/ingress.jpg 705w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-96\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A new Augmented Reality games fuses reality and video games.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When I first read this article, it reminded me of Harajuku Fun Madness from<em> Little Brother<\/em>. \u00a0Marcus and his friends played a game that would force teams of players to actually go on a scavenger hunt in the real world. \u00a0It also made me think of the monitoring the DHS would do based on people&#8217;s clipper cards and Fastraks. \u00a0Like the DHS, Google is probably also tracking user&#8217;s information and data. \u00a0While in Marcus&#8217; world this information was used to breach privacy, this will probably be used for advertising purposes. \u00a0As users spend more time on mobile, location based advertising will likely become more and more important. \u00a0Google will most likely use the data collected to drive ads based on your location. \u00a0Let&#8217;s just hope Google is as innocent as they seem or else they Marcus&#8217;
