{"id":92,"date":"2012-12-10T12:54:44","date_gmt":"2012-12-10T19:54:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/nick\/?p=92"},"modified":"2012-12-11T13:12:54","modified_gmt":"2012-12-11T20:12:54","slug":"the-vote-to-end-all-votes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/nick\/2012\/12\/10\/the-vote-to-end-all-votes\/","title":{"rendered":"The Vote to end all Votes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/business\/2012\/12\/you-killed-facebook-democracy\/\">Wired<\/a>\u00a0article, Ryan Tate explains how Facebook users have eliminated their own right to democracy on the network. \u00a0Ryan Tate is a senior writer for Wired and enjoys journalism, technology, and culture. \u00a0He has even released a book, <em>The 20% Doctrine: How Tinkering, Goofing Off, and breaking the Rules at Work Drive Success in Business<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In Tate&#8217;s article, he describes the history of Facebook and the policy to make changes. \u00a0In the past, any time Facebook makes a change to the user agreement, users have the right to vote on whether or not this change happens. \u00a0Unfortunately, Facebook requires at least 30% of Facebook users to vote in order for it to be valid. \u00a0This week, Facebook let users vote on whether or not a vote is required for future changes. \u00a0The majority of voters voted against this; however, 30% of the Facebook population did not vote so it was not counted.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_93\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"www.wired.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93\" class=\"size-full wp-image-93\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/nick\/files\/2012\/12\/facebook-vote-over.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-93\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Facebook has taken away the right for users to vote on upcoming changes.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p>While I think it is unfortunate that Facebook users have lost the &#8220;democracy&#8221; the social network once had, I do not agree that there ever was a democracy there. \u00a0In the past, no Facebook vote has ever had 30% of users vote. \u00a0It has never even come close to being 30%. \u00a0I believe this isn&#8217;t a coincidence. \u00a0Facebook does very little to publicize such voting events. \u00a0For everything else, Facebook isn&#8217;t afraid to pull out all the stops to publicize something. \u00a0I believe this is a way to take away users opinions while being able to put the blame on users. \u00a0I think the future will hold a lot of interesting changes on Facebook, and they probably won&#8217;t be\u00a0benefiting\u00a0users.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a recent Wired\u00a0article, Ryan Tate explains how Facebook users have eliminated their own right to democracy on the network. \u00a0Ryan Tate is a senior writer for Wired and enjoys journalism, technology, and culture. \u00a0He has even released a book, The 20% Doctrine: How Tinkering, Goofing Off, and breaking the Rules at Work Drive Success &hellip;
