My Motivational video

How how did that just make you feel?

My Video

For my end of the year project I want to make a motivational video. As I was looking for a motivational video to show of girls  as an example it was hard to find one that wasn’t a Nike commercial. But the reason why i went to use this type of media is because motivational videos have a way of making you smile. It has a way of lighting a fire deep within you to want to push to be something more. Motivational videos have a purpose with everything that they show and say. The early morning wake up workouts to the evening practices to the ice bath at night to encourage people to do whatever it takes to follow their dreams.

What do you see?

When I was a athlete just starting out I was always watching videos to help my self motivation. Whether it was learning through a video in Courage by a video or trying to light the fire in there myself motivation videos were always great to look up. What I would like to address is to make a motivation for women to break through the inequality even more than they have right now. I would like to acknowledge not just for women but for men the highlights of women that aren’t seen on TV. Championships, plays, and overcoming adversity is what I want to show because nobody else wants to take the chance and show.

Someone is always watching

To show and motivate women to keep doing what they’re doing by being professional athletes and potential professional athletes. Above all to give hope where hope it’s been lost. To give hope that there will be a quality one day. To give hope that men will not be the only thing showing on TV. To give hope that equal pay will rise. To give hope that the economy will benefit from this as a whole. In to give hope that they are recognized and appreciated and looked up to as women.

Making the Argument

Making the argument

With all of the inequality and gender that I have been writing about it was time to put all of my knowledge through an argument. I would be stating an argument why the reason women are facing inequality is because they’re not getting equal media coverage that they deserve.

Where to start

social-media-management
As I started this process buy a nationally talking about media and the gender gap in arguing that the media was a big influence I reared my direction into the core reason women are facing inequality and that media is an influence. Yes I will discuss the gender gap but is more focused on the media. I found many examples of inequality within sports but I decided to address one big case. The US Women’s National Team won their third world cup against Japan and was awarded a total of 2 million dollars. The fact that men got paid more than that just for losing was degrading. I found that I could write a lot about that. Going into professional athletes with in soccer I found that they don’t just struggle with inequality if they also struggled for opportunity. There are many differences dealing with professional women’s and men’s soccer. For instance women play on artificial turf where men play on real grass. When men stay in hotel rooms they stay at the opposite luxury hotel where women stay at the same hotel as their opponent.

Problems

What I initially had problems with his my introduction. I knew what I wanted to talk about the how did I get in to address it and introduce it. Because I was talking about inequality how was I going to get a good hook to get people in instead of just all this is just another inequality argument.

What helped

ann2
What really helped me was the annotated bibliography that I had done a couple weeks ago on this argument. It was a good thing to be able to go back and find things that related to beer my argument in the right direction. Although I did do some further research it was very light and I had most of my sources already in place. All I seem to do is make the official argument.

David Bowie- America

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=984_1315755315

Within my communication class we were asked to watch a video and analyze it without not knowing any background behind it. We were asked to state the connotation and denotation of the film and what i came up with was what i got from watching the film.

The title” America” and “Heroes” led me to believe this was a tribute to 9/11 because America was devastated and those who helped and lived through it are all heroes. This video has flashbacks from America then and now showing the vintage look and the of the color video of New York. What seems to be going on is a look at the New York Twin Towers and the view of a bunch of workers throughout New York. The look of tons of people that come through and work every single day indicated that many people want to be in America. As you look at the distance of people standing by water it shows that they are looking from where they came. There are a bunch of people getting off of this ship and coming to New York which leads me to believe immigrants are coming to America. When it shows many  immigrants waving the American flag it is showing that people are happy to come to America. The Statue of Liberty comes in with the fading of the American flag. The symbol for America is the Statue of Liberty because that resembles the path to Enlightenment. It is said the Statue of Liberty’s torch lights the way to Freedom and that is what they seem to be looking for. He keeps repeating “America” to make this dramatic approach to make America sound great . As David Bowie resembles and references many trends in different states across America that is why many come to “ They all come to look for, America” because of the great trends throughout the country.  “Let us be lovers, we’ll barry our fortunes together” resembles the immigrants that come in and Americans becoming one.The dark background and spotlight on David Bowie resembles that is an important message for all to hear. I think him sitting on the ground means that he is in the middle watching everything and singing what he sees. David Bowie is from the UK and it seems that because he himself was an immigrant coming to america he can relate. Maybe he is singing this song to acknowledge all that he loves america for.

Race Inequality in Sports

https://youtu.be/YX3MXthd1Cs

Within my multicultural identities class we have been assigned projects that have to do with certain themes . As I was quick to choose the sports theme I decided to come up with the research question of multi-racial America and sports athletes being stereotyped by their race. Now in the class that I am in dealing with inequality in gender I thought it was really cool to think about inequality and race.

SERENA-VENUS_3433171k
Inequality within Sports has been going around for years not only with gender but really big and race. Stereotypes with athletes are the main reason people are biased about sports. Serena and Venus Williams who played professional tennis do not seem to look the part for the average white tennis player. Tiger Woods a professional golfer is also black and Asian gets identified as a black man because he plays a white Sport. And Stephan Curry a professional basketball player that is half white and half black but since he plays basketball he’s considered more black than white. These are examples of stereotypes within Sports.

81% of quarter backs are white.

90% of running backs, defensive backs, and wide receivers are black.

Another thing that had came across my mind is  stacking professional athletes. Stacking can be defined as placing athletes in certain position based on racial stereotypes. For example blacks can  are not known for their athleticism so they will play more positions dealing with running compared to a white man known for intelligence open position with more thought and strategy. This can affect their success it can lead to coaches acknowledging the stereotype and could lead to inequality. This can prevent any success leadership wise position wise coaching or management within further jobs.

To look at how media uses stereotypes they tend to use a strategy called convergence. Convergence is used with cultural expectations with the group to get the point across to audiences. So commentating quotes  like “Springs off the floor” compared to things “quick on his feet”. To use commentating strategies to describe a race using words like “he is much taller than”Or “he is one of the hardest workers”can be a part of how the media uses stereotypes.
Being an athlete is overcoming adversity in any sport you play. Multi culture identities can affect athletes and their performances multi racial athletes with in sports cannot fight the stereotypes made by Society just out beat the stereotype. All of the examples of multiracial athletes they all have one thing in common. They be out the stereotype and many of these athletes do not go unnoticed.

Approach to a survey

How to conduct a survey

VIDEO .
Well being asked to conduct the survey I thought it was very fun to be able to go out into the world and ask questions and find out what others think without interviewing them. i am pretty excited to be doing my own research on a topic I find interesting. Although I do have some diffulcities throughout the process I keep pushing through using tools on the internet.

My approach

images (1)
My approach to the survey was to write a draft of 5 or 6 questions and then ask people if they were considered good questions. As I fix and rewrite rewrite my questions I consider him I’m asking and if I am learning anything from the survey. After reading the survey questions I’ll put a box and athletic team room so that any volunteers you want to make the survey can take the survey. I thought I would ask what gender and what support throughout the survey and ask questions about inequalities throughout college sports. I thought that by putting multiple choice answers for my service would be a lot easier than asking direct questions and getting correct answers. That way I find a better understanding of their feelings instead of judging based on the way I think that they feel. As this is not an interview I like to think that it sort of is without the talking.
Through my archival research based on Santa Clara women’s Athletics the research on and equality in sports and my own questions. I found that I could make really good survey questions. There are lots of things that had crossed my mind. In  the end  this process is fun but difficult at the same time

The Double Standard

 download (1)

Through a few of the presentations that were discussed what really stood out was the double standard of women. It was explained that a girl who attended SCU had be asked to leave the gym because of her apparel. As she wore work out shorts(mid thigh), a tank top(Belly showing) she ended up being asked to leave because she was showing to much skin. But what i find interesting is that a male can wear the same skimpy ripped shirt or no shirt at all with shorts and they are not asked to leave. This double standard in within gender is everywhere.

The workforce consists of many  double standards. While working in a certain field should be based off of ability and skill, many determine how hard the work is based on the population of men. That a higher population of women in a work force is considered a soft one. Even men get paid more then women do even if they are at the same job. Another thought that is a main argument between this generation is many girls are considered “sluts” when they have been with a lot of guys. But when guys have been with a lot of girls they don’t get called any names at all. But one thing I would like to point out with the double standard and men is that guys are not allowed to hit girls but girls can hit guys. As a women can lay her hands on a man and the man has to sit there and take the criticism, girls that would get hit by men would have them arrested in a flat second.

This double standard exists because of the appeal to the opposite sex. Don’t get me wrong I think a women should be allowed to wear anything a man can but women do not like looking at guys in bras and bikinis. I had come across this article “If men posed like women” that was a photo shoot of girls posing with motorcycles and half way through they dressed guys in the same thing. Just like if girls posed for a Copenhagen tobacco can, that would be unattractive for a women to be scruffy in the country with a big lip.

Teaching Leadership

While sitting through research presentations in my class. I came across one by Alex about Leadership Development. He found that leadership skills can be influenced through community, school, and extracurricular activities. The thing that came to mind was how leadership isn’t taught enough or supported throughout schools. Or really what is the best way to be taught leadership?

nerd

Those kids in school who have their head in a book constantly are not considered a leader yet when children have a question they go straight to those for help. This is an example of leadership. Those who are categorized as “Nerds” for answering every question right on a test or participating in the classroom set the example for everyone on how to be the ideal student. Those kids that were in my class were someone I looked up to and used as motivation even though they were they shy. These leaders are never acknowledged but only complimented. Even though schools strive for their kids to be the kid whose head is constantly in a book they almost shove it down your throat to have these high scores . But in reality if they were led by these leaders instead of demanded these scores by teachers they would get the results they wanted.

large

One finding he found stated that placement tests should be incorporated in whatever community to find these leaders. And my first thought was those who do not do well in placement tests but who are natural born leaders how will they be acknowledged? There is honestly no way you can test someone for leadership skills.  Leadership is something that comes out naturally in any way you are comfortable with. Wether you are in a sport, extracurricular activity, classroom or community.  Whenever you find yourself then you start naturally leading because of the confidence you gained.

“Teaching leadership will bring more people together” is something I agree but disagree  with. In many ways leadership can be taught with motivation. I was taught leadership through softball. One of my favorite coaches that taught me everything I know  told me one day that when I go out on the field to never stop talking. She was in search for a captain on her team and I strived to be the best all around captain to win that spot. I slowly became a leader because of my motivation to be a captain. She told me that I need to lead by example, always encourage, and most of all be the hardest working person out there. Later that year she had never announced who was captain but the girls told me that I was one to look to for guidance. But at the same time being taught about leadership in this example led to a lot of people against me rather than joining me. Out of a group of 15 girls only 4 showed they wanted the captain spot. Even because I was trying to be the best others took it differently and soon I became more of an enemy than a team mate. So maybe because it was more of a competition of who can do best it turned out differently but I do think someone making a speech or activities will teach leadership in great ways.

team-building

Teaching leadership I think will be best through activities. There is no easier way to force upon leadership then through playing a game where many don’t even realize they are leading .
