Sex Testing

What Is Sex Testing?

youtu.be/0Kyvm9uYgCM

While looking through my research topic I came across some related topics that crossed my mind as very interesting. Sex testing is apparently a very big issue when it comes to athletes and sporting events. Gender verification in sports or sex verification comes around often with International competition and when the person competing doesn’t fit the mold in the way that gender is supposed to physically appear, people start to question.

18gender-pic-superJumbo

What I found really hurtful is the women who have to be tested because they do not look like what a woman is supposed to look like. Female athletes go to physical extremes to be what they want to be and how good they want to be at their sport. I feel it is disrespectful to accuse a female of possibly being a male, just because she may have features or body structure like a male. A part of me feels bad because I wonder how that woman feels being that everyone accused her of being a male because she does not look like the average woman athlete. Who is to say that her appearance is not what she should look like? It is encouraged in this day and age to be healthy and fit, and just because a woman takes that to the extreme, now she is questioned if she is a man? If sex verification was such a big problem why don’t they test everybody instead of accusing one person of being the wrong gender? Why are they are so concerned if a female is a male or vice versa? This led to a finding that female athletes with levels of natural testosterone have an unfair advantage over any other competitors. I don’t understand how what you were born with can have such a negative impact in the success of being an athlete.

At some point we have to take people for what they are worth, male or female. Maybe the solution is a birth certificate and a notarized document from a doctor that shows the official gender they are, a month before the competition. That way there is no unfairness to argue about! Sex testing seems insulting and a complete waist of time and causes embarrassment and hatred. We need to stop characterizing people on the way they look and start accepting everyone for who they are and just accept their athletic ability man or woman.

Women sports network

 What do you See?

It is very rare that you see women on ESPN. For anyone who doesn’t know what ESPN is, it is Entertainment and Sports programming network. It has a variety of male televised sporting events and a lot of commentating shows about sports. So if it is an entertainment and sports network, why is the programming mostly male dominated? Are women’s sports not as important to show on television as men’s sports? Why does there have to be a separate television show for men and women?

Women Represent

Sports networks should want to show off women on men television and in a positive way, not like on normal television where women aren’t always portrayed to be reputable. Women and women athletes are strong and can succeed in sports just like men and also could try and take over sports television programming.  As much as men are talked about on ESPN I wonder why women are not as talked about and why women’s sports and Entertainment Networking isn’t just as big as ESPN. I do acknowledge that women do have their own network but it is not as popular as ESPN.

Men-Who-Love-Sports-Way-Too-Much

Why?

It has been said that women’s sports won’t capture the heart of male sports fans and I will never understand that. Who said that, a man? Why do we need a male audience to watch women sports? I think the reason so many women watch male sports is because sometimes it is the only thing on!

The Influence

With the booming influence women athletes are having on younger generation of women, I guarantee plenty of women will watch women sports. It would draw in viewers of more young women to get the word out and inspire other women to “Dream Big, Aim High”!  I found this positive expression when I was told about an amazing network just for women called WSEN. It stands for Women’s Sports and Entertainment Network. It highlights women athletes from all types of sports and honors women and their accomplishments, just like men. You should check it out and spread the word of women in sports!

In response to Alex’s blog about school kills creativity he summarizes that those who have learning disabilities in for their creativity cannot express themselves through school. As he describes a young girl who had ADD was struggling in school until she reached a dance class where she found her place that she felt welcome and not so challenged.I too have a learning disability that I can relate to this walk with. Just like the little girl and her dance I find it easy to connect things with sports. I’ve heard that if I relate things in a sports sound or situation I get things a little bit more easier then if it was just an assignment.

One day at practice the coach had brought up a question year that would be able to tell me if I was a visual auditory or kinesthetic learner. As this test made me think about situations and what was more like my personality I found out that I was a more auditory learner. Although I thought I was more of a visual learner. I guess I need to be talking through things more and that’s how I learn.

Growing up you find things that fit your personality and your learning disability more and more and you make accommodations for yourself. I have learned that in almost any situation to better understand it is to put things through Sports.

“Treats an essay like a math equation”

I compare an essay as a practice plan for softball. As I practice every day for softball I have to practice everyday for my writing. Each and every day I work on little by little to make the big Masterpiece so that when it comes to game day or a day to turn in the assignment I am fully prepared. As I express my creativity through Sports have learned to express my creativity through Sports and writing as it is the same exact process just another action

During class my professor had an exercise for us to tell which source is more credible when dealing with this research. As I got really confident within telling the difference between two  sources I then started second-guessing. With having to compare websites on certain topics I soon found out that paying attention to detail was really what I need to do when looking up credible websites.
finding-credible-sources-4-638
Many websites are believable because they are one example is Wikipedia as many people write their facts on there is not a credible source. Many people get overlooked Buy website and how credible they are because it is good enough to what they want to hear I need to hear. Instantly when coming across an opinion they will know that is not credible. Does the basic knowledge of what everyone thinks when they research and when they tell the difference between what is credible and not credible.
Margaret Krantz an article, Helping Students use Touch with Sources Persuasively talks about facts and claims in with the differences and what people look for when dealing with them. Krantz influences to consider few strategies when before reading an article. One thing that she states is that many look up statistics as the truth instead of arguments.
“How can one are you about the date of battle or the size of armies?”(73)
lo17_primary-v-secondary
She talks about many primary sources have different primary goals depending on what they were doing or talking about. As it makes sense that an advertisement would persuade you to buy the product a topic based research essay might be the subject of matter. The strategy won’t influence writers to change their plans and have a better understanding of developing a better topic for the essay and they will find reliable sources to read.

Run like a girl

To be a Girl

https://youtu.be/XjJQBjWYDTs

While thinking about my last archival research I got to realizing how many people over look how much women have fought. Watching the video like a girl by always is the feeling I got when I was doing my archival research about the history of women at Santa Clara. I find it very powerful and full of Happiness when videos come out like this because the expression” to be a girl” is often looked at very weak and not strong. Always is teaching girls to not be put down with what is stereotyped with women. For example women throwing like a girl as in not throwing hard as in a man is so masculine and a girl so send them in and that women can not throw as hard as boys can. I can relate to this because out of all my years growing up I was always the athletic one I was always the tomboyish and  because of my gender as a girl I was always consider not fast or not strong enough around the boys that I hung out with.

Teaching

23e955518a80c0bdcc60eefa7213e2d5

I love teaching women at a young age that they can be all that they can be because they are a woman and if they have the right to throw like a girl because throwing like a girl is more than throwing like a boy. Throwing like a boy is the average as in throwing like a girl is the new change. There were women that thought it was unusual. Being a girl you deal with struggle and if i was taught at a young age to be confident i would be far more happy. Teaching girls to e confident or teaching anyone to be happy and love yourself is huge. Many schools should teach kids to love themselves.

The Unusual

Santa Clara University one of the women had quoted that it was unusual for women to play sports. At this time I can see that men were always the strong Breadwinners and women were just now up-and-coming making the change. But the real question is if men can do it why can’t women do it.
The power behind being a girl it’s something that any woman should take pride in whether it is being the first woman on the moon or being the first woman athlete to being the first woman painter. Being a woman stands for strength and it should not be looked down upon. So as I question that one girl who said it is odd for girls to be playing sports. Because who wouldn’t want to be a part of something amazing and something that is life-changing because those who were a part of something that is life-changing change lives for everybody. They changed my life they changed the girls that I play with lives.

What Men can do Women can do

download
This led me to think about all the things that women do that men cannot do. Now I might sound rude by pointing out all the things that men can’t do but it’s not rude because men point out all the things women cannot do. As much as women can raise children single-handedly so can men. And as much as women can run marathons so can men. Those men who are bodybuilders and can lift tons of pounds, so can women. No matter what women do or men do equality is something that is important to all. it is not fun being the gender put dow because in the end we are both hard working.

The Little Things Matter

Picture_6_ad_hoc

What do you see in this picture?

Just researching archives I found a lot of articles about how women were not allowed to be considered apart of  “athletics” because it wasn’t girly enough. As you look at this picture you might athletes of Santa Clara University. Not just men or not just women are in this. But what stood out to me was this picture shows more women athletes then men .This is  a huge step for women at santa clara to be apart of this picture let alone have more girls then boys in it. Knowing that women were only one forth athletes at this school . Now there are more women in this picture representing then men.

The Double Standard

https://youtu.be/HLAJ9qZviM0

I have noticed the uniforms in this picture. I feel that girls have a double standard when it comes to uniforms. Girls were not allowed to wear their tennis uniforms on the court while practicing. They were required to wear long pants and long sleeves because their uniforms were skirts and tank tops. The thought that women were showing  to much skin was my guest to why the required uniform was not allowed unless a game.  But then in the clip women were required to show their skin. Since all these athletes are in uniform I would like to point out women are covered more then men are.  Men do not have a double standard like women. The Water polo uniform is the appropriate attire for a male but as soon as a women were to put on a two-piece speedo there would be talk.

What do you mean girly?

Being a women and playing sports doesn’t mean that I am “Girly”. The real question is why is sports considered masculine?  Men and women keep themselves healthy on a daily basis by running, lifting weights, eating healthy and most of all being competitive. To keep they body in shape is to be healthy. I don’t see why we categorize being healthy in a masculine or feminine way?

The Little Things make Me Happy

In the end many will look at this picture and look at athletes of Santa Clara University. But when I look at this I feel a little taller and I feel a little bit more confident. Not that I don’t wanna see more men playing sports or I think women should rule the world. But seeing how far women have come with playing sports at SCU its the little things that matter.

Avoiding All-Nighters

How many times do you feel all over the place with an essay? Staying up in the library, those late nights to finish up those essays are tiring. And most of the time you know how much tie its going to take to get it done. What if a simple strategy can cut down the times?

The Strategy

strategy

Michael Klein’s article, What it is we do when we write articles like this one? and how can we get students to join us? introduces a model consisting of hunting and gathering as a strategy for research. By conducting a research to see if this model he asked collogues who are interested in teaching advanced writing. Their thought was” if we can better understand what  it is we do inquire and write, then we might be capable of leading our students away from night library”(Klein 30). He seems to want to spread this model to college students as a shortcut or strategy to write papers. Having the ability to “Hunt” and “Gather” information can change the way you write papers.

The Advantages

By characterizing the work it allows you  to have a plan, keep focus, and get a better understanding of what your writing about. By “hunting” down the information it  allows you to have goals and constantly review your own work.  Many colleagues found themselves revising and overlooking their word more than once. Hunting and gathering has”Differences across disciplines”(Klein 28)  as I feel like I have a mission to hunt for information, gathering is more of” my personal perceptions of my narrative data”(Klein 28) or in my own views of things.  I think this model would influence many college students if they put this to use. I know that by using the “Hunting and Gathering” mindset it allowed me to achieve goals and keep continuous interest.

No More

Previously I had written about writing to just the requirements when receiving a writing assignment. While in my research project I went into the archives with a broad idea of Women and athletics but once I found my specific piece i wanted to research. I started hunting down anything I can find on just that particular piece. After looking and finding pieces to my puzzle I started the transition of gathering what I wanted to get out of these pieces I found. I looked on wed sites and magazines to further collect before I started to summarize what i have found. This strategy has opened many doors so that I no longer will be just writing to requirements.

Women’s Athletics Changing the Community

7448271898_41e363ffab_z

This is Marygrace Colby the first women director of athletics as of  September of 1963. Although she did not start teaching till two years after coeducation started at santa clara. She took the one-forth of women in the school and started athletic teams for women. This is a big deal for my archival research because I believe as much as men wanted to enforce this coed athletics they needed a women to really take a stand and make this happen for the university. And this is what she made happen.

“When you pull on that jersey, you represent yourself and your teammates. And the name on the front is a hell of a lot more important than the one on the back”

Through intramural sports and intercollegiate teams women found a new way to express themselves. As women started to be recognized in the academics there were now allowed to be acknowledged athletically.  If I were them at this time i would be proud to be apart of such a big contribution to Santa Clara University. This is why this is so important for women to be able to play sports because they can show their overall ability and represents their name on the front of their jersey.

This was a huge step for women at santa clara to be able to play sports because this led to a big community of women to come together. All around every team found more and more girls who had something in common and it was to play sports. Then when you meet other sports you become one big community. Later this community becomes more than just women playing sports but something to be proud of. Year after year girls you meet girls who graduate and people know other people and they all spread the love for sports. Every women in this college represents santa clara university  and we are one big community that will live on forever thanks to Marygrace Colby.

Today I am apart of that community!

Celebrating 50 Years!

banner-rosters

Santa Clara University is the oldest school in California. There is so much to learn about but I guess thats what makes it so great when choosing a research question about this college. I was considering questions from The Santa Clara Mission to athletic scholarships to women sports.  As i do not have a specific question i have a area i want to work in. But I would like to focus on the popularity when women sports were first allowed at the university, but if it leans another way I am okay with it. I am a women in athletics that feel strongly about the phrase” If boys can do it girls can do it” and I would love to research more about girls playing sports.

home-banner

This led me to want to find out more about women athletes entering Santa Clara University. Which led me to the Alumni website for Santa Clara University and we are celebrating 50 years of women’s athletics!! I wonder within the process if they knew they would end up celebrating 50 years? It makes me wanna know so much already. When did they start a women team? who helped make that decision? What was the sport that was first played by women? How did the students react to women sports? Did men and women always have the same amount of athletic scholarships to give out? In the end have males or females given santa clara a bigger name?

2004_1

Galliet’s Archival survival  gave me some real good ideas on how to start my research.  As his order will be different than mine i think that mine is better. Finding research to support a question is harder than having the research and making the question. But I first want to start out  looking through archives to know that i can find something to work with. After i will start finding materials that support my research, any more  documents or journals I need I want to put them all out on the table. Then I want to plan a itinerary or a checklist of the things I need to do. I will analyze my audience and do my best to state my claims clearly. One thing I learned from Tirabassi’s Journey into the Archives was that you cannot have one document to get your research from. There are many documents that play a kinda fill in the blanks with each other. The more efficient documents you have the more blanks you fill.

I cannot wait to find out and share more about Women’s Athletics of Santa Clara University!!

Authenticity of Santa Clara Mission

Mission_Santa_Clara_de_Asis_est_1777

Through class we have been looking at old pictures and some history from santa clara as a college. This inspired me to think about the most authentic thing on campus. The Santa Clara Mission has been most inspiring to me in many ways. When looking to come here the first thing I thought was that my grandparents are going to be so happy that this old catholic church would be right here on campus and the more I think about it, it makes me the happiest. The feeling I get and the souls I feel within the church is what makes such a big impact on my life.

Simone_Martini_047

Santa Clara de Asis was founded January 12 ,1777 by Fr. Junipero Sierra. The mission was named after a women Saint Claire of Assisi, a 13th century Italian nun. Which leads me to believe the reason for the authenticity. Think about it, a women so pure and genuine named after a beautiful mission. I think that she is almost reincarnated within the walls of the church. Every step I take from when I open the door, I feel as soft as can be. When the bells ring every day it is like hearing a women voice sing a beautiful song. What I find most interesting is that the mission was destroyed and rebuilt six times in history. The church was never given up on or abounded and that means there is a little bit of everyone and everything put into this mission. And with the amount of people who visit per day this church doesn’t only touch souls but the souls have touched the church.

1428089282662]

As I brought many family members to see the mission the one time I remember most is when I brought my grandfather.  He sat within the church and prayed, as it was the hardest thing for me to see, a tear shed down his face. That moment I walked through there with him and sat outside in front of the fountain he told me it was the most peaceful he has ever felt anywhere in his life.  My grandfather passed away a month before I started at Santa Clara University. Every time I walk towards the mission or passed the fountain I feel him around me. I have yet to walk into the mission since. But the Santa Clara Mission is a place that allows me to connect and feel my grandfather with me everyday. It reminds me deep within my heart when I walk pass the mission I think of him and know he is resting in peace. This church isn’t just authentic because of the people who have influenced it when it began but because of the people who keep it authentic today .
