{"id":6,"date":"2017-02-07T22:46:55","date_gmt":"2017-02-07T22:46:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/mason17lbst80\/?page_id=6"},"modified":"2017-03-10T07:06:07","modified_gmt":"2017-03-10T07:06:07","slug":"overview-of-the-topic","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/mason17lbst80\/overview-of-the-topic\/","title":{"rendered":"Overview of the Topic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2010, Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were introduced, and 43 states adopted the new standards and curriculum. \u00a0This video explains Common Core and its goals.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Three-Minute Video Explaining the Common Core State Standards\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5s0rRk9sER0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>CCSS has the potential to make a huge positive impact on our education systems. \u00a0In fact, CCSS-English is having great success with students and teachers. \u00a0Unfortunately, CCSS-Math is having a harder time transitioning into schools successfully. \u00a0The main issue with CCSS-Math is teachers do not completely understand the new curriculum and standards, and teachers are becoming increasingly frustrated. \u00a0Additionally, teachers are not given the resources or support they need to successfully implement CCSS-Math. \u00a0One solution is providing teachers with professional development (PD). \u00a0However, PD has proven to have many issues including lack of time and inefficiently teaching and explaining curriculum. \u00a0Research has proven that PD is an ineffective way to solve such a major issue. \u00a0A successful way to approach and solve the issues created by CCSS-Math is by hiring an on-campus math specialist. \u00a0A math specialist can provide instant feedback to teachers and work with teachers to guarantee that they fully understand the curriculum. \u00a0Additionally, math specialists can provide long-term personalized effective PD for their teachers. \u00a0A problem with math specialists is that they are expensive and many schools cannot afford to hire a math specialists. \u00a0For these schools, it is recommended that administrators provide teachers with as much support as possible including effective PD. \u00a0CCSS can be an effective way to help our students meet benchmarks; however, it is impossible to reach that goal if teachers do not fully understand\u00a0the curriculum and standards. \u00a0This is a major issue that needs a major solution. \u00a0The best possible solution is hiring a math specialist to help both students and teachers with the CCSS.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_85\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-85\" class=\"wp-image-85 \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/mason17lbst80\/files\/2017\/02\/13584535514_c2bb726231_b-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"13584535514_c2bb726231_b\" width=\"320\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/mason17lbst80\/files\/2017\/02\/13584535514_c2bb726231_b-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/mason17lbst80\/files\/2017\/02\/13584535514_c2bb726231_b-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/mason17lbst80\/files\/2017\/02\/13584535514_c2bb726231_b.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-85\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Flickr<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2010, Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were introduced, and 43 states adopted the new standards and curriculum. \u00a0This video explains Common Core and its goals.
