Why is this?

I’m going to go out on a limb here and hypothesize. In memorial to my science field day to the Intertidal zone, I’m going to present an educated guess to a question that I’m sure none of you have ever really cared to consider.

1. Deadlines

Deadlines are a real pain in the you-know-what. I’m sure most people will agree with me when I say that an assignment becomes that much harder as the deadline approaches. In my normal, non-academically-stressed life, I sometimes write just to get my thoughts unjumbled. Usually, I enjoy it. But when it comes to writing an essay for an English class, suddenly I wouldn’t touch a keyboard with a 10-foot pole. It’s the deadline. As soon as I can feel it stalking me, I lose all train of thought and can’t form a first-grade worthy sentence. With the deadline comes stress and with the stress comes… more stress.

2. Topic

If there’s a class out there that assigns written reviews of Netflix shows, I would have taken it already. But since I can’t seem to find a legal institution that offers it, I’ll have to stick to what I’ve got. In most of my English classes, topics are somewhat predetermined by the teacher. Sure, they’ll tell you that you have free range to pick what you want, but if you don’t have enough information or if he or she can see that it’s a dud, they’ll respectfully advise you to pick another. In other words, it’s code for, “You can do that, but you really shouldn’t do that.”

Sometimes you might get lucky and find a topic that you are really interested in and that has enough research on it to at least pull together a respectable essay. When that happens, you write it down in your memory book and call it the Holy Grail, because it is rare.

So until you find something that you care about or until you’ve finished all of your English requirements, just know that you’re not alone. Here’s a list of writers who hated writing and in my humble opinion, they did alright for themselves.

As someone who has always liked writing, I sometimes find it confusing when people tell me that they would rather be finding the derivates of complex functions than writing a simple essay.
