Upon arriving at the Arboretum, you will pass research centers dedicated to the study of algae farming for alternative fuels and pharmaceuticals. Called the Napa Valley of Algae, Hawaii is on the cutting edge of this new crop industry, and is making strides to mass produce algae in ways that other plants, such as corn, are currently harvested and utilized. Here in Manoa Valley, leading efforts are underway to engineer efficient species of algae to maximize their usage as alternative fuels. Sustainability is a key issue in the Hawaiian Islands due to their isolation from the rest of the world. With all of our fuel being imported by boat to the islands, finding an alternative that can be grown and harvested onsite is a key venture that needs to be undertaken should the islands wish to be sustainable, both environmentally and economically. With yields of oil being several times higher per acre than corn, algae can be grown in higher density than any counterpart and will consume less land while producing a greater amount of fuel.
