Not only in my disheveled dorm room but also in writing.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 406px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"irc_mi\" src=\"https:\/\/behlerblog.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/12\/disorganized.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for disorganized\" width=\"396\" height=\"300\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/behlerblog.com\/2012\/12\/07\/what-do-your-cerebral-file-cabinets-look-like\/disorganized\/\">Source<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Prior to reading,\u00a0<a href=\"\/\/\/Users\/lilyschreder\/Downloads\/BEAM%20rhetorical%20vocabulary%20(1).pdf\">&#8220;BEAM: A Rhetorical Vocabulary for Teaching Research-Based Writing&#8221;<\/a>, I wasn&#8217;t exposed to the large array many different research methods. I suppose I just considered research to be a loosely organized &#8220;thing&#8221; that gave students enough information and citations to craft into a paper.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 367px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"irc_mi\" src=\"http:\/\/rateeveryanimal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/cat-on-roomba.gif\" alt=\"Image result for gif: roomba\" width=\"357\" height=\"201\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thoughtcatalog.com\/christine-stockton\/2013\/09\/heres-some-gifs-of-animals-riding-on-roombas\/\">Source<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t know that BEAM was one of many different approaches to creating a research paper.<\/p>\n<p>BEAM is a<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0vocabulary to think about sources through another set of terms. For example, beam disposes the use of primary and secondary sources by employing a different lens at which writers are to approach the gathering of information for a research paper. The acronym BEAM stands for <strong>Background<\/strong>, <strong>Exhibit<\/strong>, <strong>Argument<\/strong>, and <strong>Method.\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 379px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"irc_mi\" style=\"font-size: 12px;margin-top: 59px\" src=\"http:\/\/gifrific.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Chris-Farley-Sunglasses-Flip-Shock.gif\" alt=\"Image result for gif: sunglasses\" width=\"369\" height=\"279\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gifrific.com\/chris-farley-flips-up-sunglasses-in-shock\/\">Source <\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>A distinct difference between BEAM and a more traditional research method that relies on primary and secondary sources is that <strong>BEAM allows the writer to interpret what each source can offer a paper<\/strong> opposed to the what a source is considered &#8220;to be&#8221; (in terms of primary and secondary).<\/p>\n<p>BEAM focuses on how the source is used, which in turn, demands students to become more engaged in their research to create better papers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67\" style=\"width: 787px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67\" class=\"wp-image-67 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/lschreder\/files\/2017\/04\/Screen_Shot_2014-07-07_at_9.05.37_AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"777\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/lschreder\/files\/2017\/04\/Screen_Shot_2014-07-07_at_9.05.37_AM.png 777w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/lschreder\/files\/2017\/04\/Screen_Shot_2014-07-07_at_9.05.37_AM-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/lschreder\/files\/2017\/04\/Screen_Shot_2014-07-07_at_9.05.37_AM-768x510.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 777px) 100vw, 777px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-67\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/library.redlands.edu\/c.php?g=129725&amp;p=847262\">Source<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>To further explain BEAM\u00a0<\/strong>I will describe what each letter means.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sources used as facts<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not always cited<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Considered to be common knowledge<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Exhibit<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sources for explanation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Analysis or interpretation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Used to demonstrate a claim or assertion.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Argument\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Related to secondary sources<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Peer reviewed<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Scholarly<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Academic writing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Method<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Genre expectation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Formal expectation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Framework for how you plan to approach a topic<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Proposing a method like this can lend a new and arguably better way to approach writing a research paper by<strong> using sources in ways that are positioned in the best way to \u00a0make &#8220;join the conversation&#8221; in an interesting and insightful way.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 379px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"irc_mi\" style=\"font-size: 12px;margin-top: 95px\" src=\"https:\/\/media.tenor.co\/images\/3834925aadf0fbd54be4007393fb4761\/tenor.gif\" alt=\"Image result for gif: interesting\" width=\"369\" height=\"208\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenor.co\/view\/how-interesting-coffee-drink-yes-gif-4574690\">Source<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>BEAM is a method that I will employ in my next research paper because I think that it offers valuable advantages over the traditional research method that lead me to be very disorganized.
