Chapter 1: Computer Lab

images-2Now let me walk you to the first place you should go to if you ever plan on volunteering at Sacred Heart Community Service Center.  There is a main entrance at the font of this building but we will begin by walking in through the back of the building. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer you must first fill out the application and then you will receive an email with login information. Each person must login every time they volunteer at Sacred Heart, which is on these computers located on our right as soon as we walk in.  Once your application is approved you must attend the Volunteer Orientation, which are offered Tuesdays and Fridays.  This is mandatory before actually volunteering because you need to know ahead of time what it is you will be doing as well as what to expect. Orientation will take place in the first room to your left as we walk in from the back of the building. This room is known as the Computer Lab. 471512_10150975627974450_1867949209_o

During orientation the computer lab is used by volunteers to enter their personal information into the computers. It is important that Sacred Heart stays in touch with not only the people they help out but also their volunteers. They send the volunteers monthly emails and letters regarding future events and celebrations that will take place at the center. The computer lab is also used for people who believe they qualify for programs offered here at Sacred Heart. Many of the people who come in do not have access to a computer or Internet and so we offer them this access for free. Unfortunately, there have been situations where people come in and do not know how to even operate these machines. We let these people know that night classes are offered for adults who want to learn how to use these computers. Several volunteers teach these adults how to type and use programs such a Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. They are also given lessons on how to apply for jobs online and browse the Internet.
