{"id":44,"date":"2012-02-28T22:16:05","date_gmt":"2012-02-29T06:16:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/katied\/?p=44"},"modified":"2012-02-28T22:16:05","modified_gmt":"2012-02-29T06:16:05","slug":"definately-not-a-gamer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/katied\/2012\/02\/28\/definately-not-a-gamer\/","title":{"rendered":"Definately not a gamer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently read an excerpt from <a title=\"Jane McGonigal\" href=\"http:\/\/janemcgonigal.com\/meet-me\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jane McGonigal\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0 New York best seller <a title=\"Reality is Broken\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/topics\/life\/big-book\/excerpt-reality-broken\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cReality is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World\u201d<\/a> book.\u00a0 McGonigal is a PhD from Berkley has and worked in the gamming industry for over a decade.\u00a0 The book seems really interesting, and it might be worth skimming through one day.\u00a0 McGonigal describes how gamers escape reality to the video game world because reality is broken, because we cannot find the camaraderie, the exhilaration, or the success in reality that we can get from games.\u00a0\u00a0 She goes on to discuss how game are starting to transition towards games that are designed to \u201cimprove quality of life, to prevent suffering, and to create real, widespread<br \/>\nhappiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, I have never been a gamer.\u00a0 Probably because I am the little sister, and my brother used to whoop me at Mario Kart.\u00a0 I am one of those people who McGonigal says sees games as a waste of time.\u00a0 That being said, I love the idea of creating useful games for gamers.\u00a0 To turn something that is unproductive into something that can improve the world is an amazing idea that makes me less afraid of what the world will be like for my daughter.<\/p>\n<p>I have a tangential thought on why gamers likely love games.\u00a0 I feel that my generation is the instant gratification generation.\u00a0 We love to be able to get what we want when we want it.\u00a0 We love fast food, smart phones, On-Demand, and the Internet.\u00a0 Because a lot of thing can come quickly and easily, we get annoyed when things actually take work. No wonder the divorce rate is around 50% (this, of course, coming from a divorcee).
