{"id":29,"date":"2012-02-09T23:42:50","date_gmt":"2012-02-10T07:42:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/katied\/?p=29"},"modified":"2012-02-09T23:42:50","modified_gmt":"2012-02-10T07:42:50","slug":"ittookmeforevertofigureoutwhypeoplewerewritinglikethis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/katied\/2012\/02\/09\/ittookmeforevertofigureoutwhypeoplewerewritinglikethis\/","title":{"rendered":"#ittookmeforevertofigureoutwhypeoplewerewritinglikethis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don\u2019t tweet, and it did actually take me forever to understand why people were using hash tags on Facebook.\u00a0 Facebook is enough waste of my time, I do not need to add to that with other social medias.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure I\u2019m missing out on some things by not tweeting, but we all make choices.\u00a0 Despite my non-tweeting, I really liked the article <a title=\"The Revolutions Were Tweeted\" href=\"http:\/\/ijoc.org\/ojs\/index.php\/ijoc\/article\/view\/1246\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Revolutions Were Tweeted: Information Flows During the 2011 Tunisian and Egyptian Revolutions\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 that was posted in the <a title=\"International Journal of Communication\" href=\"http:\/\/ijoc.org\/ojs\/index.php\/ijoc\" target=\"_blank\">International Journal of Communication<\/a>.\u00a0 The peer-reviewed academic journal posted this article that was an in-depth review of how tweets were used and who was using them.<\/p>\n<p>The article was fascinating!\u00a0 It discussed how tweets were used in the Egyptians revolution to convey messages and encourage riots and gatherings.\u00a0 This is nothing new to me though; social media is the way to organize events these days.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t be able to remember my own mother\u2019s birthday if it wasn\u2019t for Facebook\u00a0 (that might be an exaggeration).\u00a0 What I did find interesting is how many tweets were actually done by professionals and how information was truly being spread through this social media.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been beat over the head to check my sources before believing what I hear (proof of that point is below).\u00a0 It does seem a little strange to me that a lot of people rely on such sites for important information.\u00a0 The article actually says that scholars \u201cquestion whether Twitter is a social media service or a news medium\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The obvious answer is both.\u00a0 As someone who gets the majority of her news from Facebook (I know, it\u2019s horrible, but I don\u2019t watch TV either, and I do enough reading for school, it\u2019s the last thing I want to do when I\u2019m done), I am well aware that social media is one of the main sources of information for the youth of today.\u00a0 I wonder if everyone Google\u2019s information they find on social media sites (like I do, when I care), or if they rely on this information they receive?\u00a0 Remember the <a title=\"Fake Martin Luther King Quote\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/national\/archive\/2011\/05\/out-of-osamas-death-a-fake-quotation-is-born\/238220\/\" target=\"_blank\">fake Martin Luther King quote<\/a>? It is easy for something that is not true to make it&#8217;s way around the world before anyone realizes that it is not true.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Boring stuff I have to include to get the full credit for this blog in my class, but I feel deters from the flow of my blog, so I\u2019m putting it at the end:<\/p>\n<p>The article was a collaboration of six different researchers from varying backgrounds including Microsoft Researchers and three members of the <a title=\"Web Ecology Project\" href=\"http:\/\/www.webecologyproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Web Ecology Project<\/a>.
