Adderall, Source: WordPress

The amount of students abusing and using this party drug cocktail, has been rising noticabely in the past years, espeically around college campuses today. In order to make this  deadly cocktail you must have 2 ingredients: Adderall & Alcohol, and you must combine the two. Ricker & Nicolino (2012) found in their study that Adderall is one of the most abused drugs amongst college students in the United Stated alongside, alcohol. What’s frightening is that students are unaware of the dangerous side effects that this drug can entail. As defined in the U.S. National Library of Medicine (2010) Adderall is a combination between dextroamphetamine and amphetamine and used as part of a treatment program to control systems of ADHD.

In the study done by Looby & Earleywine (2011) they observed the characteristics of college students with ADHD, who misused their prescription for various reasons, one being that they used the pills for partying. They did a series of interviews, and found that the misusers combined Alcohol and Adderall together to create an “epic/elongated” experience when partying. They defined it as an energy booster, where the drug counter acts agaisnt the alcohol effects, allowing you to drink more by limiting the  negative side effects of drinking. This is the exact reason why students are abusing this drug. They think that since alcohol is a depressiant and Adderall is a stimulant that it would just counter-act each other, and not understanding what these two dangerous combinations entail.

In Jenkins (2012) blog she found that 1 in 5 college students admit to using and abusing Adderall, and not even having ADHD. What this means is about 20% of students are using Adderall for recreational usage, and exploiting it for all the wrong reasons, for example partying. Jenkins explains that Adderall has become the “wonder-drug” among students today, and has become an essential party enhancer. Lastly, in the article by Varga (2012) she focused her reserch on the dramatic increase over the last 10 years with the distribution of the prescription stimulant known as Adderall. The researcher explored the factors of illicit use, seld-medication, and recreational use, and the consquences that can transpire, which is stated in the DANGERS section in my website.

Regardless, all of these researchers link illicit Aderall use with further sustance abuse such as alcohol. Although Adderall is a prescription drug it can still have long term and short term consequences, espeically when combining the two. In the end, I am to advocate for change. This epidemic needs to stop and students need to become aware. That is why I created this website and video. If this page changes 1 students/persons life I did my job, if not I will keep advocating for this change.
