{"id":137,"date":"2016-05-18T15:45:35","date_gmt":"2016-05-18T22:45:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/jkipper\/?p=137"},"modified":"2016-05-18T15:46:58","modified_gmt":"2016-05-18T22:46:58","slug":"survey-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/jkipper\/2016\/05\/18\/survey-results\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey Results"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Research goals<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Through my research I was hoping to learn more about how college students value racial diversity in an education setting. \u00a0I want to see the trends in the data that will argue which groups of students value diversity more than other students. \u00a0It will be interesting to see if those who value racial diversity go to diverse colleges or if they just wish they did.\u00a0 Also, I want to see if the students who went to diverse high schools and lived in diverse cities tended to value diversity more, less or basically the same as other students.<\/p>\n<p><b>Research methodology<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Since I was looking to learn about the value of racial diversity at college, I decided to survey young adults who were either: about to go to college, in college or just out of college.\u00a0 It was also important for me to survey a diverse group of students in order to have a good way to compare how the value of diversity changes as the group of students changes.<\/p>\n<p>I was able to post my survey on my own Facebook page, and text some of my friends at colleges across the country.\u00a0 By doing this, I got responses from many different colleges.\u00a0 I also used the Santa Clara frisbee team\u2019s \u201cgoogle group\u201d in order to get responses from alumni who went to Santa Clara previously.\u00a0 By asking many different groups of people, I was able to get 74 responses to my survey, which provided a big enough sample size to see trends in the data.<\/p>\n<p><b>Survey Analysis<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The following table\u00a0shows how people respond to the statement, \u201cI wish my college was more racially diverse.\u201d\u00a0 The data suggests that for many students, racial diversity is an important part of what they value in college. \u00a0This is seen because 64% of students either \u201cagreed\u201d or \u201ccompletely agreed\u201d with the statement. \u00a0Only a total of 7.4% of respondents either \u201cdisagreed\u201d or completely disagreed,\u201d which suggests that students tend to wish their colleges were more diverse.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-139\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/jkipper\/files\/2016\/05\/image-3-300x185.png\" alt=\"image-3\" width=\"417\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/jkipper\/files\/2016\/05\/image-3-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/jkipper\/files\/2016\/05\/image-3.png 579w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When I started the survey process, I thought that people who went to a diverse high school would value diversity higher than students who went to less diverse high schools.\u00a0 The following table corroborates my belief but to less of an extent than I thought.\u00a0 While only 4 respondents went to extremely diverse high schools, which is a very small sample size, they valued diversity much more than other students did.\u00a0 They valued diversity at a 4 on a scale from 1-5.\u00a0 No other group of respondents valued diversity higher than 3.4 out of 5.\u00a0 The other groups of respondents seemed to value diversity about the same, regardless of what type of high school they went to.\u00a0 This seems to suggest that unless students went to extremely diverse high schools, the level of diversity at the schools did not affect how much diversity was valued.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-140\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/jkipper\/files\/2016\/05\/image-2-300x178.png\" alt=\"image-2\" width=\"411\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/jkipper\/files\/2016\/05\/image-2-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/jkipper\/files\/2016\/05\/image-2.png 617w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 411px) 100vw, 411px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Research goals Through my research I was hoping to learn more about how college students value racial diversity in an education setting. \u00a0I want to see the trends in the data that will argue which groups of students value diversity more than other students. \u00a0It will be interesting to see if those who value racial &hellip;
