Study Abroad in Milan – Pre Thoughts
By Liv De Jounge
As international business minors, many of us are thrilled to study abroad. Santa Clara offers so many unique study abroad programs, so if you are an international business minor, or interested in international business, I suggest you take advantage of these programs. This fall I will be in Milan, Italy participating in the IES Business Studies program, and attending classes at a partner university, Bocconi University.
I chose the Business Studies program in Milan because it is a global fashion capital, and a massive hub for international business, making it an ideal location for students interested in immersing themselves in real-world business scenarios. In addition to my IES classes, I also decided to apply to Bocconi University because I wanted a more immersive experience. Bocconi University is one of Europe’s most prestigious institutions, renowned for its academics and strong connections to the business world, I would suggest to anyone who has the opportunity to attend classes at partner universities to take advantage of it. I am so excited for this fall, but there are some considerations that everyone studying abroad should keep in mind no matter where they are in the world:
- Studying abroad this fall is an amazing opportunity, especially when global business relationships are poised for change. As the world’s eyes are zeroed in on the United States in anticipation of our upcoming election, it is important to remember that the US is not the only country where major elections are expected to reshape trade and economic policies. The outcomes of many elections will influence trade policies and regulatory frameworks, making this an important moment for people studying international business.
- There are not many times in your life that you will have the opportunity to create strong international connections. So something that I am keeping in the back of my mind is the opportunity to build a global network. Always network whether it is with professors or just mundane encounters. Connections with professors, industry experts, and other students can lead to potential collaborations in the future, and even more amazing experiences. building the skills and networks necessary for a successful international career. So keep an eye out for important connections, and don’t be afraid to approach someone and give them your information, you never know what will happen!
- Developing cultural competence is crucial for international business. By immersing yourself in the local culture, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how cultural nuances impact business operations and negotiations. Use your time abroad to conduct informal market research. Observe consumer behavior, industry practices, and local business strategies to gain firsthand knowledge that can be applied in your future career. Try your best to immerse yourself in the culture → learning about cultural differences makes navigating the world of international business much easier
