(View the Boardwalk Gallery) You have now received a complete tour of the Boardwalk of Santa Cruz. You were able to view many different sites and try an assortment of foods. Most of the foods found on the Boardwalk were of high calorie or high sugar content. Throughout the tour, we saw many places serving the same types of foods including ice cream, pretzels, fries, corn dogs, candies, etc. Granted the beach is a place for relaxation, yet I feel it is important that there should also be healthy options especially due to the growing number of people diagnosed with high diabetes or increasing cholesterol. Instead of ice cream having yogurt or fresh fruits could possibly enhance the idea of a healthy experience at the beach.
Nevertheless, there were two places pointed out in the tour with healthy meal options including fruits and vegetables. This shows that this Boardwalk is also introducing healthy options for the public. However, until there are more options available, there are several steps that can be taken by the public as well. For example, you can bring your own food. No one checks your bags at the entrance; this means you are allowed to bring food from home. The idea behind pointing out the dietary dangers is not to completely remove unhealthy foods but increase the quantity of nutritious options to leave with a fun yet healthy experience.
