From USC to SCU

Hey, welcome back guys!!!! Today I want to share something that many of you guys may not know about our college; Santa Clara University-SCU was not our college’s original name.

That’s right. I still remember when I was visiting the SCU campus during the orientation, a senior student told me all those beautiful palms on campus were friendly gifts from University of Southern California because it hoped that Santa Clara University can change its name. Once upon a time, Santa Clara University was called University of Santa Clara, AKA USC. But, University of Southern California also can be called as USC. Yes, such an interesting coincidence.

I did not actually pay any interest to this whole changing-name story at first because I like this name “Santa Clara University” a lot. But, I noticed this change again when I was doing the research in the archives. In some letters, newspapers, and files,  at first, people used USC, and then suddenly, people began calling it SCU.

I decided to do a little research in order to figure out that why did exactly people change the name of the college. People around me kept telling me that because the president of University of Southern California asked University of Santa Clara to change its name because people can be easily confused if they kept having the same abbreviation. However, the president of University of Santa Clara proposed that he can change the name, but University of Southern California needed to buy some super expensive palms for University of Santa Clara.  And according to the rumor, the president of University of Southern California agreed and University of Santa Clara changed its name to Santa Clara University.

But, after the archives research, I realized that this was not the true story. I found it on Santa Clara Newspaper and I learned about what actually happened through the report. According to the report, the name change was announced in the mid-1980s. And the reason that people in college made this decision was that they just simply realized that Santa Clara University might sound better.

And literally, that was the whole story.

Oh, if you are still thinking about then where did Santa Clara University get those palm trees, I got the answer too: Former University president William Rewak claimed that this whole thing had nothing to do with USC. USC did not buy the acronym with the $2,000-a-piece palm trees that line Palm Drive. And at last, he said:” We bought the d*** things from nursery.”

Enough for today’s blog. And here comes my best blessing to all me readers and everyone:
