In these movies, the robots surpass humans intelligence and then try and take over the world.

Robots will not kill the human race, but they will takeover.

his takeover is not a bad thing at all. We must put our trust in robots and understand that the price of robots is becoming much cheaper and the uses are becoming more accessible and more practical. Every child’s dream of having a household robot to take out the trash and clean their rooms will soon become reality. Robots already have those abilities and can do things more efficiently than humans, especially in the workplace.

From Tumblr Media

Meet Baxter.

Baxter is cute, unassuming and about to take over many people’s jobs.

He’s a personalized, inexpensive, worker robot, and is considerably cheaper than human workers who can do the same job. Kevin Kelly states in his article on technology in the workplace, “Priced at $22,000, it’s in a different league compared with the $500,000 total bill of its predecessors”. Baxter is easily programmed and it can do the work of a human at the fraction of the cost.

The need for human workers won’t completely diminish, but robots like Baxter will quickly take over a TON of our jobs. Read Kelly’s full article talking about technology taking over jobs here: https://www.wired.com/2012/12/ff-robots-will-take-our-jobs/

It may seem like a doomsday prediction, but it’s not. Allowing robots to do more menial tasks gives humans the ability to learn how to do more interesting work as well as creating new job opportunities involving technology.

This is just one example of the many industries where robots are already being used. Not only can robots take over many jobs, they can also create a safer world, if we can learn to trust them.

Take the example of commercial planes and autopilot. Commercial plane pilots really don’t do all that much. They’re mostly there to smile and hand out little wings to children as they step on the plane. Planes can, and for the most part, do, fly themselves nowadays. But because of the many fantastic, (and extremely misleading,) science fiction movies, we feel the need to have a human to babysit the autopilot “just in case something were to happen.”

From Imgur

This is the same issue with self-driving cars. Would you give up your keys and let your car drive you to your destination?

There are many safety benefits behind self-driving cars such as the fact that drunk driving deaths would be completely eliminated. And, if we gave up our keys, there would also be almost no traffic anymore. Self-driving cars can tailgate safely in almost any place in the road because they can sense the other cars stopping much faster than human reflexes.

An example of what intersections could look like with self driving cars. No more frustratingly long stop lights!

From Imgur

Also, using self-driving cars means that instead of spending long car rides behind the wheel staring at the extremely flat topography of South Dakota, people can sleep, watch movies, get work done, or simply ponder the meaning of life.

From Entity Mag

The future is coming fast and it’s a future where robots can make our lives more interesting, safer and more relaxing. Doesn’t that sound like the future we all want? It can be ours if we put our faith in robots and ignore all of the science fiction movies that warn us of this future. There’s no possible way that this could lead to robots taking over completely.

…right?

Terminator, Transformers, Westworld, Wall-e and many more movies portray robots and technology as villains determined to kill the entire human race.
