{"id":1264,"date":"2017-02-27T06:42:47","date_gmt":"2017-02-27T06:42:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/finis\/?p=1264"},"modified":"2017-02-27T06:42:47","modified_gmt":"2017-02-27T06:42:47","slug":"scandal-at-a-security-company","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/finis\/2017\/02\/27\/scandal-at-a-security-company\/","title":{"rendered":"Scandal at a Security Company"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite Tyco being a security systems and services company, its CEO Dennis Kozlowski managed to embezzle over 100 million dollars from the company before finally being caught in 2012. \u00a0Kozlowski utilized commingling of assets to keep his fraudulent purchases hidden. \u00a0He would use Tyco as a secondary bank account in which he could spend at will. \u00a0These purchases including millions of dollars in artwork, all of which avoided sales tax in order to not raise any red flags. \u00a0Furthermore, Kozlowski spent a whopping 2 million dollars just on\u00a0his second wife&#8217;s birthday party, and much more on various properties he purchased.<\/p>\n<p>Kozlowski&#8217;s crime was not solely based around him, but also members of the companies Board of Directors. \u00a0By having higher ranking officials\u00a0commingle funds at a lesser extent, he was able to make the practice a normal aspect of the company. \u00a0Furthermore the auditing firms lack of due diligence\u00a0allowed this fraudulent activity\u00a0to continue. \u00a0When it was all said and done, Tyco had to repay 2.92 billion dollars to investors and Kozlowski was sentenced to 8-25 years in prison. \u00a0What do you believe was the biggest financial weakness within Tyco and was there any singular way to prevent this fraud from happening?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"_148817642\" class=\"citation_text\">Romero, Jonathan. &#8220;Tyco Corporate Scandal of 2002 (Ethics Case Analysis).&#8221; <i>Panmore Institute<\/i>.
