First being the Association for Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Beth Firachu, the Florida Reef Tract Project Coordinator for AZA talks about their program and what they are doing for Florida’s coral reef. Some background information on AZA is that it is a non profit 501(c)3 organization. AZA’s mission is to help members and animals they care for by providing services to advance animal welfare. AZA represents more than 240 facilities within the United States and overseas. They have 5,708 individual members. They are an educational organization as well, reaching 50 million children each year. 12 million are students, and 40,000 school teachers are trained each year. AZA has 2,555 education programs including: connecting to nature, habitat loss, careers, human wildlife, and more. AZA is also animal care and welfare, 80,000 animals are in their care, 6,000 species, and 1,000 endangered species. They do field conservation and research on top of this. They are commiting to The Floridian Reef. The Florida Reef Tract is currently experiencing a multi-year, disease-related mortality event that has resulted in massive die-offs in multiple coral species. As many as 25 coral species, including both Endangered Species Act-listed and primary reef-building species, have displayed tissue loss lesions that often result in whole colony mortality. The Florida Reef tract rescue project is to hopefully combat the dying reef in Florida.

Here is the link to AZA: https://www.aza.org/

Another organization I learned about was the Marine Conservation Costa Rica. The MCCR focuses on Marine & Coral restoration. They offer marine internships, to help students and others learn and join the team. Costa Rica has lost 70% of its coral reefs in 30 years. MCCR is restoring Costa Rica’s reef, one reef at a time. THey harvest healthy coral. Corals are the first micro harvested and planted in their coral nurseries in the ocean. They are watched and cared for 3-9 months. Corals are cleaned and monitored regularly. They survey the reef and create a positive impact for the future.

www.marineconservationcostarica.org

Overall, there were a multitude of other presentations and events within Coralpalooza.
