In honor of earth day that ran from April 17- April 25 2021, Earth Day Tokyo held a Sustainable Fashion Week at Miyashita Park in Shibuya. Consumption is a major concern in the step towards sustainability and fashion, in particular fast fashion, is a large player. Every one of us needs clothes to wear and clearly, we all want economically efficient fashion items that won’t break our wallets. It is a difficult tradeoff in our world today because many sustainable clothing are considered too expensive for majority of the people. The biggest issue here is the question on how to change consumption habits of the population?
The Sustainable Fashion Week held at Miyashita Park aims to tackle the issue on consumption habits and fashion. The event brought together various teams and organizations to hold booths and have discussion panels on online and offline platforms. Through this event, Fashion Revolution Japan calls for the reform of the fashion industry through the practice of transparency in their business and production.
Frankly, it is appalling that sweatshops, unethical business models, exploitation and un-sustainable behavior is still disregarded when it seems as though it has been talked about for a while now. The prolonging issues with sustainability highlight the exploitative nature of business models as well as underlying issues in society on a bigger scale. Holding fun events like a Sustainable Fashion Week I think is a great way to engaged the community and promote sustainable consumption habits.
