Marco Springmann opened up his Ted Talk by showing the brutal images of fire in California and France during last summer’s heatwave. He then linked images of dead zones that have been made so by the process of eutrophication. The link between all of this was the beef and meat industry and our food intake as a whole. Through his studies, he has found that there are situations where we could, in fact, avoid the catastrophe of emitting past our planet’s boundaries, however, there would need to be implantation of technological changes in fertilizing and freshwater irrigation, for example. Another change Springmann talks about is that we have to stop our food waste problem. He also created a sustainable healthy model of a diet where the center is mainly nuts and beans as well as chicken and fish instead of pork and beef that worked well to reduce emissions. He also argues the opposite of the common idea that people won’t be able to stop eating meat. He believes that people just have to learn to cook and eat better and not only will they help the environment, but they will also live much much longer. He leaves the talk on the note that it’s time that we all stop just eating and not thinking about what it is and the impact it has. He believes we are past that time and I definitely agree with him.
