Greenpeace, an international activist organization that “expose[s] global environmental problems”, filed a lawsuit against Walmart in December of 2020. They revealed that Walmart marked non-recyclable plastics as recyclable. You can read the actual lawsuit here. It can be so frustrating to try your best to avoid certain products and really pay attention to what you’re throwing away, however, with the growing popularity of “greenwashing” companies have been kind of scamming their customers to get them to buy their not very green products. Buzz phrases such as “100% Recycled Ocean Plastic Bottle” seem to actually mean “it’s too expensive to actually go out into the ocean to get the bottles so we’re just going to get them from the shore here” (sorry, not sorry Windex). Not to be completely cynical, I mean thank you Windex for that full 100% recycled material but isn’t the point of calling it “Recycled Ocean Plastic” mean that it came from the Ocean? Well anyways, I’m here to tell you that there are alternatives! Brands like Blueland solve this issue. They’re selling tablets that when dissolved in water, turn into multi-surface cleaning liquid or hand soap. And for your other soap needs head over to your local farmers market or Lush for crafted and unique soaps. Or you can look at brands like Quip who specialize in sustainable dental hygiene products like reusable floss picks available at your nearest Target!
