Who they are: GAIA is an alliance of more than 800 NGOs and many individuals in over 90 countries around the world that envision a zero waste world. They see waste as a symptom of profit-driven economies, and they promote zero waste as the economic shift towards sustainability. Recent projects and programs include members sharing information online and in regional meetings, campaigning toward common goals and providing a community for open discussion. They focus on single-use plastic and have had various achievements in the past 15 years including the Philippine national ban on incineration which has been in effect for more than 15 years. Who they are: They are a movement that aims to reduce single-use plastic and live in a world without toxic by-products of plastic pollution. Von Hernandez, the founder of the group stated, “If we cannot recycle or compost this material, then should not be producing them in the first place.” Joining the movement means committing to work together towards Break Free From Plastic’s vision and principles.
